Computer-aided design software were created to not only enable more creativity but also to solve real-world problems. Today we are going to talk about Solidworks and rhino and what they have to offer.
So what are the differences between them? And which one is better? That’s what we are going to talk about today.

Stop! don't compere two different softwares. And Rhino is nurbs modeling software. And it was initially designed to be a plugin for AutoCad. That's why it have such similarities to AutoCad and command interface like AutoCad and that's why it is quick modeler. It's in completely different leauge.

I look at it like Rhino is a design software and SOLIDWORKS is a complete engineering software. A lot of CAM and and CAE features, simulation tools can be found out of the box in SOLIDWORKS, which are entirely absent in Rhino and mostly need 3rd party proprietary plugins or scripts. But I absolutely love Rhino's Grasshopper, hope such a feature would be added in SOLIDWORKS too, it'd open a range of algorithmic design capabilities. SOLIDWORKS is more inclined towards mechanical engineering (or maybe that's how I feel because I am a mech student) Also, Rhino's 2D capabilities are not at all useful for producing machine drawings of any kind, and at best, it _can_ produce product catalogue drawings, that too with no in-built tools for dimensioning or annotation. In a nutshell, this comparison makes little sense. Only major thing in common is that both have 3D modelling tools lol. I've only ever seen Rhino being used by my architecture friends at college. All automotive or aeronautical people I've talked to use CATIA or NX but never Rhino.

Agreed, I am a bridge designer and Rhino was often used to produce a very precise model of a item in still state, it does not have the workflow of solidworks where you can see how part of your machine works, which is why it is often used in architecture and jewelry design. One of my friends in auto industry told me they often use solidworks (and catia) to see if something works, and then remodel all the parts in rhino for 3d printing or production
@mvelentzas
@mvelentzas 2 жыл бұрын
You're completely wrong about Rhino's 2D capabilities. You most certainly CAN produce machine drawings and it does have in-built tools for dimensions and annotation. It has an entire drafting menu and layouts feature with its own dimension/annotation styles. Not sure how you missed that.
@nuduw
@nuduw 2 жыл бұрын
@@mvelentzas Lol, being able to insert orthographic views and dimensions/annotations doesn't make it a 'good' 2D drawing package :) Rhino lacks the most fundamental thing - GD&T standards and identification. I've clearly mentioned that it is ok for producing catalogue drawings but it is nowhere in its current vanilla state capable of producing production drawings.
@mvelentzas
@mvelentzas 2 жыл бұрын
@@nuduw I think what you mean is that Rhino is not as good as Solidworks at producing production drawings (which it obviously isn't). Which is different from saying that Rhino is INCAPABLE of producing production drawings. It's like saying a Hyundai Sonata is incapable of driving because it isn't a Lambo.

You have not understood anything, I work professionally with solidworks and my hobby is Max, Blender and I love these programs but they are not comparable, Rhino is very good at organic surfaces and solidWoks although it makes surfaces it will never be able to make them like Rhino does and on the other hand Rhino does not need to make mechanical production parts although it is great in Jewellery and product design.... Something that SolidWorks has little capacity although I have been able to make good designs with a lot of effort ... I prefer Rhino for design. Neither should be better or worse than the other, they simply should not be compared. Would you compare Illustrator with Rhino? I also use Illustrator for my designs, but I can't think of comparing them.

@@nonameishere7234 Sverchok is similar to grasshopper and the recent Fields change to Geo Nodes makes it more similar to Sverchok. BlenderBim is on the brink of producing drawings and the IFCs it can create are better than Revits. Rhino has only just got SubD added but Blender had had it for nearly 20 years.

I lost you here. Are you saying that you can design a part for production manufacturing in blender ? I'm not saying 3D printing. I experimented a little bit with blender Subdivision for smooth visualization. it's not the same as subdividing a control mesh "cage" that generates G2 continuous Nurbs surfaces by Tsplines. I use blender only for rendering and animating and UV unwrapping a CAD file I made somewhere else usually solidworks or Alias. I never made something in blender. What are you referring to by IFC ?
@benveasey7474
@benveasey7474 2 жыл бұрын
@@nonameishere7234 I think I know what's happening here. I design water features so I don't need the tight tolerances necessary in manufacturing. IFC is the standard file format for exchanging 3D models in the AEC industry. For me collaboration and speed of organic modelling are more important than precision. Being able to create visuals and animations are also a handy bonus although Unreal Engines DMX abilities and Realtime rendering are tempting.

The other software that is widely used in aerospace and automotive is CATIA and Alias for Class A surfacing. SW is used for some product development and Rhino for some industrial design, but its lack of a history tree makes it pretty much useless and DOA as an engineering tool .

Sorry, but this is misleading information. Rhino is barely used in the automotive industry. I worked for most European and some of the Asian and American car companies and I've never seen rhino except for visual programming whith Grasshopper, when they build komplicted grids. If you want to be a modeler in the car industry use alias! Even though Rhino is developed by EX alias wavefront employees, rhino is more used in product development maybe in the boat industry sometimes it seems like the Architecture industry and surely the product design industry but not or barely in the transportation design industry! So for everyone who wants to be 3D modeler in the automotive industry you beter learn Alias or blender.
