We are lookimg for solidworks upgrade from 2010 and need CAM. Is cam included with any suite without subscription? I cannot justify yearly subscription fees but would like CAM inside SW.

SOLIDWORKS We looked and found the CAM requires an on going subscription. I dont know how SW is going to compete with fusion based on this requirement. If SW would offer CAM without subscription fees I would be all in but I cannot justify yearly fees for the small amount of CAM we require.

No adaptive clearing strategy to remove the majority of the excess material? We were always using Solidworks and SolidCAM, but these day's we use Fusion 360 a lot... The strategy of the adaptive clearing (Fusion 360) is so much better then the strategy in SolidCAM 2.5. We could buy imachining... but 5500 euro's vs 0,00 for Fusion 360 is a "no brainer". So Solidworks... As Trochoidal Performance Cutting (TPC) is the future, add some TPC/adaptive/imachining in the CAM program.

Exactly! SW had the chance to buy HSMWorks and passed on it. Now Adesk owns it and ported it to Fusion 360 as well as inventor and of course SW. This SolidWorks CAM is too late to the game.

This looks a lot like Camworks so I would imagine it has volumill built into it somewhere. IMHO Adaptive from HSM, is fine but far from optimal. Solidcam would be my first choice if you could enter your own speeds and feeds information for it imachining, I'm not a fan of the slider. Volumill to be has the best tool paths, steady and reliable. Just my 2 pennies.

Regardless it will prove to be a waste of money just like their FEA package. They think its necessary to dumb things down, or maybe its just all they know???

Solidworks CAM is extremely limited, if you are looking for a product that can do 3,4 and 5 axis machining as well as lathe work you will need either additional software or the full CAMworks lineup.

They licensed a portion of the software and it is now being co-developed. CAMWorks will still exist for full 3-, 4-, and 5-axis milling, 4-axis turning, mill/turn, and wire EDM.

drilling and reaming? finishing operations are all included I assume?

Yes. In fact it will choose a drill/ream/bore operation based on your part's tolerance info if it exists. Otherwise, you can choose your own manually.

It is CAMWorks, which has always been integrated, but now it is co-developed by the SOLIDWORKS team and included as an OEM product.

I was afraid of that! CAMWorks is a clouge with their tool database and feature recognition, its a nightmare. Even for free, its not worth it. Anytime SW touts "automatic" or "intelligent" or "smart" or "expert" or "knowledge based" those features are to be avoided. Heck, they cannot even make their hole callout formats comply w/ASME, even after years of submitting requests. And now they have machining? Its no surprise to me they picked the worst CAM package on the market to incorporate. You owe it to yourself to check out Fusion 360 for CAM. It is essentially HSMWorks (awesome!) and its efficient and easy to use however its tool library is sort of convoluted but hey, its tool paths are excellent and is very affordable. Solidworks, the new ProE!

Having taught CAMWorks now for about 7 years, to new programmers and people who are experts in other CAM tools, if there is anything that I have learned it is that there is no "perfect" CAM tool. Preference is very subjective - some people embrace the "intelligent" features and others completely distrust them. Fortunately there is a pathway for each to move forward in the software. Some prefer the workflows in Esprit, or Gibbs, or HSM and that is totally fine. Personally, I have experimented with just about every CAM tool out there and my ideal software would incorporate facets of each. CAMWorks has always struggled with offering an intuitive user interface. With the newest release, I can already see how SOLIDWORKS' influence and resources have made positive changes in this area. There is room for improvement in Feature Recognition, but I don't think it will ever satisfy people who want it to program their part A-Z. Through experience, I can tell right away if I'm going to use AFR or interactive feature creation based on the geometry of the part - just like every other tool in our workshop, it's about knowing when to use it, and when not to.
