The Cold War ended over 25 years ago, yet the threat of a nuclear attack has not disappeared entirely. Airmen of the US Global Strike Command still maintain a constant vigil, always on alert and making sure America's nuclear arsenal is secure and combat ready. However, despite its importance to national security, it's not really a glamorous job. TSgt Nicholas Kurtz travelled to a missile field outside of FE Warren Air Force Base, Wyoming to give us this rare glimpse of the daily duties of the Airmen who guard and operate America's Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles.

Most of the ranchers in Montana appreciated having an LF in their backyard. The roads off the main highways, although gravel had to be maintained to hold a 100,000 lb. transporter/erector with a missile in it. Air Force kept the roads in great shape and plowed them out in the winter. At times when the snow was so deep, the ranchers couldn't feed their cattle, AF helicopters dropped bails of hay on request! Never heard any complaints in the late 1960's.

I spent a number of years in the ICBM nuclear missile fields in North Dakota overseeing technical missile electrical and mechanical teams actually working on the missiles in the silos and Launch Facilities. At the same time, the security forces are also there to guard the site and protect the teams. Security has a very difficult job for many reasons. While maintenance teams are working underground, the security teams are topside in the harsh weather. It can get very cold out there (up to -70 degrees below zero) depending on the time of year or day or night. There were times our vehicles were chased by American Indians who don't like "Feds," or they may play around with the sites. It can also get pretty boring out there standing guard for many hour or an entire day and night. I have to give the security forces a lot of credit for a tiring and difficult job securing these isolated places.

I once had to guard stinger missiles at a guard shack at White Sands missile range overnight. I was a helicopter crewman on a OH58c. We were there to fire a side mounted stinger missile. Well, being an enlisted E-4 I got voluntold to perform guard duty on the stinger missiles that still hadn't been fired. So that night I was alone in the middle of the desert in what amounted to a phone booth guarding very prized weapons. Terrorists would kill for these weapons. I wasn't what you would call a soldier's soldier. More like, a shammer. Well I had an M16 and about 10 rounds. Late that night a vehicle approached. I could see it for miles because after all, it was the desert. I started running scenarios of haji coming up behind me and slitting my throat. I ran through each option in my head. I finally decided the phone booth wasn't a tactically superior option so I ran out into the desert and laid prone. I had the vehicle in my sights the whole time it approached. Eventually the vehicle got close and stopped. His lights shown on me. The door opened and voice shouted "Hello, DCA Security" or something to that effect in a Mexican accent. He was nervous, and I was nervous. We exchanged a few "everything is ok" and he went on his way. When you guard something like that it really messes with your head, especially when all alone. I was a serious soldier that night.

Story - we are at Marine Detachment at Lackland AFB, Texas, base where they train to make Airmen. Its cold, windy, early December, we are out there doing out PTs at 5am/0500, and comes around 6am or so, we see about few hundred of trainees run out to the paved training yard wearing sweats in all whites while sounding off to commands. The 13 or so marines there, we are taken aback by it and ofcourse Gunny gets even madder as our attention drifts away briefly so back to more pushups. As few minutes passes, it starts to drizzle, and all of a sudden, we hear sounding off and then everyone runs back into the building. Meanwhile we are still warming up for the events lay ahead. Another story, Few individuals from other branches were late to class, the Navy instructor got upset and asked them to spend a day in our shoes if they thought their day was hard. I remember he specifically said, "what you are assigned to do is their break time." No one was late ever again.

Before the fall of the USSR, there was a map the US Government updated and printed in the newspaper once in a while that showed all the areas of the US Communist Block nationals weren't allowed to travel. One of the areas was a perfect outline of where I lived, Humboldt County, California. I sat there thinking, "Wait a minute.....we have Redwood trees....we grow world-famous pot...and 90% of the county is uninhibited, low laying mountain range. You can't even drive to 80% of it. So.....there has to be nukes hidden somewhere in these valleys....there's something....somewhere......I'm a local and I don't have a clue what it is...why are they telling the world to come look here?"

Things have changed so much. I was a Security Specialist back in early to mid 80's. That attitude you see comes from a culture of not enough training and just enough to get by. We would always talk about how its mostly deturance. If something does happen, those two SRA that roll up are sacrificed. Their bodies are first indication of direct threat to facility. That was first thing that I learned from my supervisor as a young jeep. That is why their team is men responding and woman dispatching. Doubt me? Look to see how many women deploy to the alarm? At any facility. Zero. USAF spends their money on high priority projects. SF are not seen as high priority. That's why the motto is "First in the fight, last to leave."

Hated the affectation, but always did very thorough, because that's what duty is. I died inside while doing so. For me this was harder then any mission abroad with the troops or any commando training I ever did. Would have changed for a combat mission any day but had no luck. That's what some of these guys in this video also go through. They have the mindset to go all in and serve while getting looked down to by others who are 'lucky to join the fight'. Have you seen the mass public, Walmart poster childs all over the place, I only see the upside to being away from them, no one bitching to you, fresh air, sure you may get a nuke dropped on you but with those chances you might as well NOT fly in planes as that would have more probability. As far as Jody, well, here's an idea, don't be trying to turn a hoe into a housewife. It's a chance you'll have to take, I know, just go with me on this for a second. If you met yur bitch at a bar, if you met her WHILE she was seeing someone else, if she keeps in contact with male friends or her ex's, if she be dressing like a who'a after you put a ring on it, if she's on the phone all the time and when you get close she hang up, if she dressed like a hoe when you FIRST met her, ...she just might be a hoe. In that case, I'll be the first motha' fucka' on your front porch when you're gone. Just don't be tryin' to be Captain Save a' Hoe and you'll be alright.

As an elevator mechanics helper, 50 years ago, my mechanic and I showed up to do a repair on one of the three elevators in the control silo. We stopped 100’ from the gate. We were 20 minutes early, the commotion we stirred up could have been a hornet’s nest. Our day was over as soon as the men in blue surrounded us, rifles drawn. They knew who we were and that we were scheduled to be there. Didn’t matter, we were twenty minutes early. After an hour of separated interrogation, we were told to leave, no repairs today. To add insult to injury, they kept my pocket knife!

I started out in the Air Force in missile security at Grand Forks and Minot AFB. We had outer zone security and inner zone security. Outer zone went off and a strike team responded. As they got close to the missile site, a large oblong UFO slowly left the area. They had to get Lockheed to come re-set the electronics in the missile.

That's a little overstatement on their part at least for the missile field in Montana. Most sites are at least 30 minutes by chopper with some being over an hour away. That's a long time to be in a fire fight with only 210 rounds of ammo
