PEAK DISTRICT WALK FEATURING EYAM, FOOLOW AND BRETTON
"Epidemic of Eyam"
Filmed 5th November 2014
Post-production completed 22nd December 2014
I visit the famous "plague village" of Eyam in the Peak District and do a short circular walk taking in one of the neighbouring villages and a hamlet with a pub providing a spectacular view. I also talk about a minibus trip I organised earlier in the year, which involved stopping at some of these pubs I pass today.
Filmed in the Peak District in the county of Derbyshire. Locations include Eyam, Foolow, Bretton and Mompesson's Well.
Written, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.
Any other names credited in this film, i.e. Bob Morgan and Martin Roy, are pseudonyms, which I used at the time of making this film. However, I no longer use these pseudonyms as I want viewers to be clear that my films are completely my own work.

As with all the films I make, this is a mini-movie of my personal journey along the walk, in which I might share some of my own personal stories, and not actually intended to be a guide to the area.

Well I've had a lot of experience in making these films now. Most of them (basically from no.18 onward) I have made over the last five years since I've been living by myself and have the time to make them when I'm not working. Thanks again for such lovely comments Pete and for taking the time to watch. Cheers, Patrick :)

I’ve walked round Eyam many times and up to Mompessons Well. So retracing my footsteps here. Thanks for the memory Patrick.I visited Eyam Hall when it was managed by The National Trust and enjoyed the exhibition which I saw in the disused Methodist Chael.

Lovely countryside around these three places, Patrick. I hadn't known about the hall at Eyam before, but it's an amazing looking old building. In fact the village has got some real character to it, building wise. Obviously renowned for the epidemic of centuries ago, that's why it's such a desired place for historians. You've got some real excellent countryside views from Eyam Edge, and the hillside looks so impressive from the village itself. I bet you did enjoy going around in the mini-bus with friends to those local pubs, and not having to worry about driving yourselves, Good times, eh? Anyhow, many thanks for this, both myself and my Mrs really enjoyed it. Take care.

I think Eyam Hall is closed to the public now. The village is another lovely one though. It's a great walk up to the edge and enjoy a drink at the Barrel Inn whilst you're there. Not done one of those ale minibus trips for some years now, but they were good times. Glad you enjoyed it Ffranc, thanks for watching 👍

What an incredible place. It's overwhelming.... All the individual stories of life and death, all the brave souls not knowing that they play such an important role in our history. Imagine being able to share what we know today about disease. Imagine being able to sit along one of those rockwalls thats been there for hundreds of years, touching the same rockery that another person like me had touched in 1665! Ugh, I could go on and on, thank you for sharing!

Hi Patrick, that was cruel wasn't it. ? No I'm not referring to the Bubonic plague at Eyam ... but you giving me just 20 minutes to watch such a fantastic video. ... Haha :) I couldn't believe how lovely this was though... Superb. That pub called the Barrel looks like it's best to be enjoyed on a week day ? Those views looked lovely from there. .. I'm so glad KZbin recommended this. Have you ever thought of making extended versions of some of your special videos ? I don't know how hard that would be. Anyway it's much appreciated.. I've saved this in a KZbin playlist ... well done. David

Haha thank you David. Not been to the Barrel since I filmed this, great place though. Extended versions of my favourite films is a nice idea, but to be honest I'm not looking to create any more work for myself as making these films does take up a lot of my spare time. Thanks for watching and for your kind comments David :)

I think we can take for granted these videos. Yes I remember now, it can take a long time for me to just make a short video. Not easy to perfect either. Many thanks Patrick.

Nice wander there Patrick. 2014 was a pretty good year weather-wise, hard to believe it was November, looks like a spring day in the video. I was over that way with a pal two weeks ago when we parked at Foolow and walked to Eyam and back but took a detour down to Housley along the A623 and up to Furness quarry before dropping down to Eyam for a pint at the Miners. Not much blue sky though, mainly rain, hail and sleet. ATB Dave.

After watching this film last year , I visited an old book shop in preston called halewoods who collects and sales rare books he sold me a small book on the plaque in eyam , I always thought it was pronounced e- yam didn't realise silent -y - and what a sad tale it was , very much like many tales of plaque which swept the countryside , when I was writing stories for The Haunted North group , last year I again came across a ghost story concerning the vicars wife where she was seen in the church yard in eyam ... proved to be a popular tale ... I am going to try and visit eyam maybe over the next year because I believe ,the museum is great and it would be such a grand place to photograph , so thank you Patrick for sharing this particular tale with us ....Frank and Lee ...

Eyam does have a sad story behind it, but very interesting at the same time. Great village and plenty to see there. There are people who actually live in the Plague Cottages today. Eyam Hall is worth a visit too. I went inside there another time. Hope you do visit Eyam when you can, it's worth coming to see. Thanks Frank and Lee. Cheers, Patrick :-)
