Frozen, I don’t know if you will ever see this but ever since I was a young boy, I have always wanted to go on a backpacking trip. Life happened and I never perused that dream. After watching your videos over the past 6 months, I have been learning and buying gear. I will now be fulfilling that dream this weekend, hiking a 3 day 2 night on the laurel highlands hiking trail. You have inspired me to peruse this and I can’t thank you enough. I also live outside of Pittsburgh and I hope to one day meet you. Bryan

My Wife's Grand Father worked in the Shawnee Park for close to 25 years. He retired when he was 70. When he was almost 75 we went camping with him. I was only 25 and my wife 21. He walked our butts into the dirt on those trails. LOL We where fit but not as tough as he was. He teased us for years after that. He said that he felt that very late fall or early winter and early spring was when the Park is the prettiest.

Hey Frozen...Just recently started hiking. Never did before, until I watched your AT Journey Thru Hike vid. Truly inspired me. Wife and I now hike a local trail (just 2.5 - 3 miles) 4 to 5 times a week (mainly for exercise) and sometimes do day hikes on weekends. No overnights YET. 😉. I hope to retire within the next couple of yrs or so and have set a goal for myself to do the AT. Your vid was one of the first to spark my interest. Wife says I’m obsessed with it now!! Enjoying watching others’ daily vlogs who are on the AT now, like your buddy Wild. Please keep the videos coming, because you are indeed inspiring people! Thanks!!!

It is nice to see you out on trips and making videos again. One thing to consider on your conversion to becoming a ground dweller is you don't have to give up your hammock. Switch out the underquilt with your sleeping pad. Now you can use your hammock/tarp/sleeping pad as a hybrid system. It is not ideal, but it works. Sleep on the ground if there are no trees, or hang if you can't find a level spot to sleep on the ground. I pretty much use my tarps exclusively, which I really like because they are waterproof and I feel more connected to the outside than being in a stinkin, leakin, tent.

Nice to see you back out on the trail... joining us solo weekend warriors 😂 I followed you on the AT the whole way it was epic.... that’s a bummer that the tent leaked .. that’s an expensive tent you’d think they would put a dab of seam sealer on those stitched pads specially at that taut point at the top . Another summer pad you might consider is the Rikki Tikki pad from amazon ( stupid name I know) cheaper, lighter and quieter than the tensor it is one of the most comfortable pads I’ve ever used... again great to see you back on the trail .... 👍👍

Its fun seeing someone do a trail I'm at a couple times a year. The wilderness section is also a fun part to tack on, and actually the connector trail (ie what you'd use if you only did the north, or only did the south loops) has some fun parts. I'm surprised you had such big condensation issues at camp 5 as well, that usually the one condensation free camp there, at least for me.

Interested in how your Tensor holds up. I had the Tensor R and it popped a new baffle every night I used it which would create the tiniest of pinhole leaks. I ended up with a total of twelve leaks, all in consecutive lines across baffles at the hot weld seams before I finally gave up on it. Nemo refused to stand behind the defective product without my original receipt. As any thru hiker knows, receipts from towns that you pass through are not something that you hang onto for months on end 🙄

Love all of your vids! I did want to say that if that's a Gore Tex jacket, it might just need to be washed and dried! That can help keep it in good shape, and activates the DWR that helps keep you dry, but if it rains long and hard enough I'm not sure anything will really keep you dry long term. Rain gear is more to keep you from getting cold. I have rain paints but never once worn them in the rain, the one time I tried they slowed me down too much. I do pull them over my SmartWool leggings and sleep in them occasionally for added warmth! But you probably know all of this, just figured I'd mention it since you said something about your rain gear not keeping you dry. I haven't been on this specific hike, but I have done a decent amount of running in Ohio on the Burning River 100 ultra marathon course (twice) and love those trails! I remember being on the Buckeye trail briefly and vaguely remember it being tough, but fun, lots of up and down.

@@FrozensAdventures Thanks for responding! I figured you probably knew, but I've also been surprised how many people want to trash or donate a GTX jacket when they notice it not working as well. I had someone offer to give me one once saying they didn't think it still worked, after how much I spent on mine I probably should have just accepted. They are proud of that stuff. I used Frog Togs until I just couldn't stand them anymore,

If I was going to take somebody new to hiking whom I didn’t like, this is where I would take them. Shawnee is a ball buster. Rainy, hot, and humid it seems regardless spring, summer and fall. Plus they cut the trails with Bobcats sometimes leaving a trail strewn with ankle twisting rocks. Little to no switchbacks and poor trail routing as far as ups and downs go. All that being said, if you’re a true backpacker, the misery of Shawnee holds a special place in your hiking heart. Lol

I had that sweat chafing problem in that area as well and I used lotions and baby powder too and athletic underwear but it turned out all I needed was some very skimpy cotton briefs that breathe and gently hold all the right things in all the right places. I haven't had the problem again since.
