You closed the water bottle while it was steaming hot and when it cooled down it shrank for a tiny bit and got tighter. To open it up, just heat it up with hot water again and it will loosen a little. Great trip and thanks for sharing. :)

Finally, a REAL backpacking/camping channel amongst the sea of adventure “influencers” driving around in their TRD Pros w/ $10K rooftop tents or $100K Modded Vans and flying their $500 drones. You actually take your viewers along on your hikes, and provide practical backpacking tips. 1 video in and I could tell you know your stuff. Keep up the great content.

Cheers to the most interesting, educational and gracious commentary. Bravo to “Lord of the Rings”. The books were outstanding and so were the movies. “The Road goes ever on and on down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, And I must follow, if I can.” -Bilbo. No hiking poles? Most interesting. Even a Hobbit had a walking stick. Be well. Wishing you peace and good fortune. Happy Trails!

You keep on doing what makes you happy and being you, Your Vlog is going to be a great success. Don't forget to triple check your hot water bottle when putting in your sleeping bag as you don't want leaks, DOH!

Hey! This might have been stated already. But when you heat water (or food), it becomes less dense. When you put it in the bottle and it cools over night, it creates a suction as it returns to it's normal density. In the future, using some hot water to heat you water bottle back up can relieve some of the suction and allow you to open the lid!

Cheebs, I just love how you’re grounded, in the bigger scheme of life… 🤗 The comment you made around the 8:45 mark about the gratitude for being “able” to do what you’re doing… it struck. Since a child I have always loved the outdoors, camping, fishing, hiking & such, but then I’m afflicted with muscular dystrophy most of my adult life, so I’ve been somewhat limited in my outdoor adventures…. With my body dictating, what for me is physically possible, most of the time… but not always! 😊 just wanted to say, keep it up… never taking anything for granted & forever & always… mind over matter! See you out there! 🤗

Outstanding video! They now have fixed the trail. You had to drop down to river and then up. Now it will be easier. Ok no one read this! There are outstanding camps on this trail. Only Sykes has hot springs. I would say do what you did and go to Sykes. Then on way back stop at one of the campgrounds. A few are right on the river also.

31:06 Hi Cheebs, I'm glad I came across your channel and I'm loving this video. You're such an adorable person. Anyway, about this topic of not yet having ultralight gears.. It's definitely fine while getting started or being fairly new to hiking and backpacking. Consider it as training, because if you start with ultralight stuff and get so used to it then all of a sudden you need to bring more stuff with you on future hikes, it'll suck for sure because you never got used to carrying heavy load. And yes, ultralight stuff are so expensive. Better experience carrying heavy gears first and slowly upgrade to lighter gears as you get better at it. Personally, I see it as a reward for myself whenever I finish a successful backpacking trip.

Your videos are so awesome! It was so cool seeing the hot springs! It is very surprising that you didn't run into people while you were there. I went to this place in Virginia this past summer that was called "Warm Springs." You just park on the side of the road, and there is a gazebo with brochures and maps for the area. Right behind it is a little pool to sit in with a tiny waterfall. It is just a little dammed up brook. It is so nice! Isn't it strange when you meet people who have never seen Lord of the Rings!?

I absolutely love these videos! I get to camp and hike places I've never been, vicariously, through you. And I'm so glad you talk about the reality of these things. You'll always forget something, maybe you don't have the most efficient and ideal item for a specific task but you do what you can! Also, I think your water bottle created a vacuum as it was cooling down which is why the lid was being so stubborn. I've had the same thing happen to me and even while unscrewing the lid the suction would pull it back down over the threads, it was such a pain in the butt to get it off.

OMG this is so cool. Me and a buddy did this hike way back in 1982. We were stationed at the Naval Post Graduate school in Monterey. I remember it being 12 miles in. It about killed me! I was so exhausted but we had to set up camp gather kindling ect. we could hear rapids near by. I remember the hot springs were just pooling water into stone structures very primitive looking but cool none the less. The icy cold water of the rapids rolling through giant boulders was amazing. It was an adventure I cherish to this day. After about mile 6 or 7, I wouldn't talk any more. Jeff was just laughing. Seeing you with your Go pro and describing the wonder of it all. When I saw your campsite, I said Yes! I was there.😊

I did this hike solo in 1977, out and back to Sykes Hot Springs. One of the most memorable backpack trips I have ever taken. You did a great job with this video. Brings back such fond memories. I really appreciate the way you show your love of nature. By-the-way, I don't think what you were showing as poison oak was indeed poison oak. With poison oak the leaflets are stalked. What you are showing is a plant with deeply lobed leaves. An easy mistake. Anyway, thank you so much for the video!
@csn583
@csn583 Жыл бұрын
9:55 It's not. PO never has sharply toothed leaves like that, always smooth/lobey edges. It also usually has an oily surface, though that can vary by age. If you avoid everything with leaves/leaflets clustered in threes you will avoid poison oak/ivy, but also a ton of other plants! ☣️🌿 The clover-looking plants are redwood sorrel (oxalis), which are good to eat. Preferably cooked to break down the oxalic acid, but fun to chew on for a citrusy zing. Can't tell if the vine has thorns, but if so could be blackberry. (PO has smooth stems/vines.)

Gotta love Big Sur. You didn't reveal the location until halfway though your video, but I could tell almost right away that you were making your way up to Sykes. Awesome location and classic hike. And you are correct, those hot springs can get awful (literally) crowded. The fire damage most evident on that trek was from the 2016 Soberanes fire. It burned almost that entire canyon, yet the redwood trees can survive it. You can see the new redwood growth in many places and it is really cool. Redwood trees grow very fast when young, and it has been cool to see the new ones breaking through. I was there this summer and there were definitely happy trees due to the epic rainfall in 2023. I resolve to return every few years to see their progress. Much of what you saw and pointed out was indeed poison oak, but much wasn't. The "leaves of three, let it be" motto is a pretty good way to go IMO. Big Sur is essentially the mother-ship of poison oak. I am very susceptible and even though I am really careful, I always get touched a fair amount while in Big Sur. Its tough late in the year because the leaves will yellow, die, and fall off but they are still poisonous. The Barlow Flats detour is on many maps because the trail was washed out for a long time. I braved the washed out section once and it was sketchy to say the least. However, I understand that the main trail just opened back up (post Summer 23). So I can understand that many mapping apps still show the detour, but you didn't need to take it.

You covered some wonderful things in this video. First of all, I like to thank you for including, "people who don't have the opportunity to get out hiking anymore. I have been an invalid and stuck in bed for the last 11 years. I have always made it a point to thank the person doing the video for allowing me (us) the opportunity to go hiking, canoeing, camping, bushwacking , etc. through them (you). Being able to live these events through you has given me the opportunity to do one of my favorite things. Let me explain. I've spent most of the last 50 years living in Colorado and of those 50 years, I have either lived in a log cabin (off grid) or in a tent (off grid) or in a vehicle (off grid). Of those 3 methods of survival, I've been in a tent (by myself and my Molly {my Golden Retriever} ), the most ! My tent is a 6-8 person nylon dome. If I have to backpack to my campsite, I have a 3 person hybrid and forgo the variety of campstoves and heaters that I use if I can drive up to my campsite. Actually a wood sourced heat and cooking is the best and the first choice. Back to your recognition of the "ones who can.no longer get out into the wild". You are the first person who has done that. Usually it's us thanking them/you and then they are acknowledging our thanks. So I'm extremely grateful to you for bringing this up.❤

Awesome video love the scenery! If you ever find your water bottle lid is too tight find a limber limb that you can wrap around the lid then grab a hold of the two loose ends and clamp it around the lid with your hand, and it will give you leverage to loosen the lid. You can also wrap a strap around or a belt around the lid and tighten it with a stick like you would a tourniquet and loosen it that way.

Don't know if anybody has mentioned it yet but the not being able to open your water bottle...don't feel bad at all, I learned the hard way also lol Anytime you put super hot water into a bottle and put a top with a seal on it, as the water cools it'll actually create a bit of a vacuum which makes it a lot harder to get open. Pretty much there's only two options...one is to let the water cool down and then open it. Or two, run hot water over it to heat it up and you'll be able to open it. Loved the video, that was definitely a hike to get all the way to the spring. That camping spot looked spectacular!
@matt6740
@matt6740 Жыл бұрын
Ya, I was ping to comment this, it’s the pressure vacuum from the water cooling. If you’re not worried about heating plastic, you can put it in a pot of hot water to heat it back up and make it easier to open. I love backpacking, but have never worked up the courage to go solo. Too much of the “buddy system” ingrained in me from scout camping. Great job!
