Many guitar lessons fall into the 'give a man a fish' category. This, however, is a 'teach a man to fish' lesson and worth so much more. That it's based on a Gilmour classic is just a very big cherry on top. Excellent stuff, Brett. Thank you!

I'm no professional guitarist in the slightest - I've been tinkering for 30 years having fun playing along with tab sheets for most all of my favorites from the 70's and 80's. I've just now later in life wanted to expand my own playing just a little to have fun. I say all that to also add I know ABSOLUTELY no music theory - so a lot of videos are lost on me because I don't know the language. That being said - I am ELATED to find I actually understood your explanations PERFECTLY - you managed to teach me some more advancements with my playing FINALLY taught/explained in a manner I could GET !!!! Made great sense and you just single-handedly taught me something I can understand , use and expand on for the first time EVER on KZbin - thanks so much for teaching/showing this the way you did !!

David Gilmour is THE reason I became a guitarist. The smartest thing my teacher did when I 1st started playing was he taught me how to “play the guitar” before anything else. In other words, he let me explore how to physically play the instrument in my own natural way, using my fingers properly of course. Because he did that though, I was able to create my own style and “my own sound” if you will, which of course is very much based on Gilmour, with a lot of bending, and a lot of finger harmonics. So my style naturally became very melodic. Once that was 2nd nature, then we went back and I started learning and applied proper scaling, which then had my style naturally applied to it. For me, that’s the way to go. You can teach anyone structured scales but melody has to come naturally or it’s not really melody.

It was so great to hear you talk about David Gilmour almost exactly how I have talked about him. I belong to a classic rock facebook page in which people post classic rock songs- and people can make comments, along with the person who created the post. There are always people that will say this guitar player or band is better than that guitar player or band....and they will even expound on that by saying things like- this guitar player couldn't tie the shoes of that guitar player.( you get the picture). I absolutely hate that first of all...I always say to them...MUSIC IS NOT A COMPETITION ! I do prefer to listen to guitar players who play melodically and with feel -Like David G. People on the page will often bring up guitar players that can play lightning fast- a million notes a minute- I always come back and say that I prefer to listen to players who put some soul into their playing.

Just when you think he can't come up with yet another masterclass in CAGED, he goes and does it again. Bravo. 👏👏👏 Every single note broken down and put into crystal clear context. So much so, that you make it sound like the solo wrote itself. As if to say "well of course this note was the natural choice for this part of the solo". So glad I bought your course. I don’t know what caged is, but I do love This song and solo. You are a GREAT teacher and make it seem so simple. I learned so much so far and I’m only 1/2 way through the video. Thank you so much. I have so much gratitude in my heart right now. I believe again that it’s possible for me like I did when I was a kid trying the just learn the pentatonic scale. This is why you are the man. You make scales not suck ass by giving them context and meaning. Also, you're one of the few who realises that learning at this level means no need to turn a 20min vid into a 40min vid by pointing out every note in an effort to pander to beginners and intermediate.

I much prefer watching a teaching like this, using shapes to solo in, than the typical...ok, put your ring finger on the eleventh fret and bend it up a half step then bring it down and slide to the thirteenth yada yada yada. I may learn the solo that way but I don't focus on the chords being played. This is a great teaching and plan to start looking at all of the chord progressions I practice and jam to and looking at chord shapes to improvise to instead of always looking thru the lens of the scale patterns I've already learned. Thanks for opening my eyes a little wider!

I went and seen ZZ Top on their blues tour way back when and Billy Gibbons version of Rough Boy was bone-chilling. I always knew him as a Freddie King guy and that's why I loved his playing but the stuff he did that night during Rough Boy was as rock'n'roll guitar God as I've ever heard. Super melodic and it was years ago but I remember staying on a note for what seemed like forever and when he would bend it the note would swell like he was using scalloped frets.

I've almost always played my leads through chord shapes. I've always thought, and felt they feel more melodic and soulful. I generally only used scales to either connect from one spot to another or maybe just a little lead break. And I couldn't tell you all the names of the chords I'm playing since I don't know much theory but there is more chords then scales in my mind so it seems only natural you can find more lead ideas from chords than scales. Thanks for an awesome lesson! I am still having a problem staying away from "just" scales when I do a solo so this is just what I need. It was how I went about soloing for years so it is tough to break the habit but using the chord tones sounds so majestic over straight up scale based soloing. It is amazing but what you showed us from 10:30 - 12:20 really slaps me upside the head with how it is all right in front of me rather than me trying to over complicate things with scales & modes. Thanks for taking the time to record & put up awesome lessons for guys like me who are broke & need some guidance & examples to help get me past the plateau I am at right now. I appreciate it & I will make sure to think "chords" first & then the scale rather than defaulting to the scale shapes first. Have a great day & a very Happy Father's Day to you @Brett Papa

That was REALLY great because you showed and explained your approach combined with a well known example. That way it becomes way more obvious what you mean. Thanks for the lesson 👍👍👍. Cool stuff to work on for sure ! 🎸 Greetings from 🇩🇪.
