The solo stove is a "gasification" stove so its meant to double burn. This means the initial smoke that is burned gets burned again making almost a smokeless burn. I think the issue you had was you loaded the wood too high. It should not go over the top inner holes which is the secondary burner. When burning correctly it should look like a gas stove flame

Yes and the top ring is installed upside down. Flipping it over gives you a little more room to fit the wood in below the holes. I have the slightly larger version and use pellets which typically last bit longer while still having the fire ambiance.

for the solo stove, try adding dry kindling to it, like small sticks, twigs, leaves etc, and it might help catch the wood better!

Our son's took a large metal pail and drilled holes in it and made a stove. It works really well. The solo stove is perfect for camping. So cute!
