First solo OTC Colorado Elk hunt and I had bulls, not one but 2 within 50 yards, and all on day 1! Be on the lookout next week for more. This trip was an adventure.

OK .. you wanted suggestions. 1. I just heard you talking about downed timber, tough going and it might take you 2 days to get one out. Well .. that's the line between harvest & no harvest. Many times that's the ONLY way you're going to get one. That's where they live. 2. I like your enthusiasm and it sounds like your E-scouting worked out for the first episode. I think your mistake on the first day encounter was calling when you got in close. That gives your location up. When going in solo calling is ok to locate but then get your wind right and sneak in. When he bugles you move 10-15 yds, no more calling from you except when you cow call to stop him for the shot. One thing I did a long time ago which has helped was I read Cameron Hanes book DIY Bow-hunting elk solo. I put some of his methods to the test and it really works. Those bulls will stay in cover and usually 75+yrds from where they hear you calling, and they can pin-point the location of your call within inches. You are doing a great job. I'm only watching ep. 2 now. Mental game is tough. You might avoid the shitty down timber stuff until you find the elk. You might be putting yourself through anguish for nothing.

I finally had success this last season. Took me seven years to seal the deal though I was close and usually had 3 to 4 good opportunities a year (mis judging yardage, shooting trees and things like that.) I was solo when I got my first elk and once I knew I had his attention and he was coming, I went silent and closed our distance as fast and silent as I could. I figured when he sounded off he was 200 yards out, I closed in about 80yards to a good spot and just waited quietly. He remembered my last cow call and slowly kept making his way to that. I was able to close the deal and am so grateful to get that opportunity. Many times I stayed in one spot and called thinking he would come in right to me and they always stayed about 80 yards away. Nonetheless you did great and I’m sure you will get one (if you haven’t already, I’m still watching.)

Did several solo archery mule deer hunts years ago on Barrillas Mountain in New Mexico. I preferred solo as I didn’t have to interact with anyone. Killed a couple bucks. Back when there were no rangefinders cell phones or decent quality arrows. Used old Fred Bear broadheads then. Had MRE food from the civil war I think lol. Nasty stuff. Enjoyed watching

You were at the right altitude however... I seen a bunch of elk where the snow fell this year in CO... I spent the entire month doing 2 figure 8's around the entire state of CO just checking out my usual spots and enjoying the mountains this year...

At least for me it was not on the weather report. Just goes to show how fast the weather can change and that you have to be prepared for it.

What is your tripod? (monopod with tripod legs?). How did it work for you. It seemed to set up and level out pretty well in this video. Thanks for sharing!

It works ok. You have to find a flatter spot to be able to set it and leave it. It is a Sirui 204, with the va-5 head

IMO - Drop the aggressive bugling and resort to more calf calls & small sounding/lame/short bugles..... Calf's are the young hotties to young satellite bulls.... A bull with cows typically won't want to challenge anything.... Practice calf calls so quiet that you don't even need to open your mouth.
@jeffcordero_
@jeffcordero_ 2 жыл бұрын
I for sure will. It’s just so damn hard not to try and bugle when they are responding. But I defiantly learned that just because they are bugling doesn’t mean they are coming.

If they answer move! You are not bringing them in, especially if the get to the hang up spot before you can get passed it. They are simply too smart! Play the wind, if that bull has cows and you keep cow calling those cows will move the bull away. If you are within a 100 yards do a challenge call , that’s it, no cow calls.

@@jeffcordero_ I'd actually say you had a pretty darn successful first go at it. Your intelligence and pre-planning was a big part of that. I think that more you realize that there's gonna be the highest of highs & lowest of lows, it won't be a surprise & weigh on your mental game next time. I don't know if you watch any of Corey Jacobson's content (Elk 101), but if not, you should. PS .. you have a pretty cool job.

@@slinger3350 Thanks again. obviously we all want to punch the tag, but I did take a lot of moments and situations during this trip that I consider wins. I also can't lie, I also love my job, it is what I always wanted to do. Put a lot of time, effort, made sacrifices to get to were I am. Im applying that same mindset and attitude to hunting.
