Because it was killing the stego and stegos are a bit more important than rexes. And I think he didn’t realize it was a really good Rex because he was focused on the stego (I also didn’t realize until you pointed it out). I don’t know if he noticed, but even if he did I think he still would have killed the Rex because stegos are more important.
