The Devonshire farmers would travel to Pwll Du beach on the Gower to collect limestone from its quarry! They would use ballast to cross the River Severn, deliberately sink their boats on the beach, throw out the ballast, and refill with limestone. Put the plug back in the boat, float , and return to North Devon. I’d love you to investigate the whole story. Pwll Du Remembered, by Heather Holt should assist? 😊

Great piece of industrial exploration and it looked like you had the whole place to yourselves, although I do feel sorry for you - so much rain on this tour! I’m sure you don’t have to worry much about quicklime there nowadays, an awful lot of rainwater has passed through that ground since site work ended. Great news that Winston passed his annual medical, I guess this gives you confidence for planning this year’s adventures.👍

I seem to have rain wherever I go 😅 I think a cloud just permanently hangs over me waiting for me to leave the house. I did panic when I first read up about quicklime, but wondered whether it would still be around and still be active after all this time had passed. Thankfully, I think you're right. We're at home now, and Winston has got a nice long rest before a BIG adventure that I have booked for us next. I will reveal all closer to the time 😉 Thanks for watching and commenting.

Quicktime is seriously nasty stuff, and a traditional use for it was to aid the decomposition of dead bodies. When prisoners were hanged in the UK quicklime was added to their coffins, with holes drilled in the bottom of the coffin to allow the "soup" to disperse rapidly. Did you bring any home as you might want to consider it for your unwanted "admirers"? 😉

Winston reminds me of my dear departed border collie, who would never go very far away from me and checked on me to ensure I was always safe ♥ I think the weather made the whole experience far more atmospheric and makes you think how hard they must have worked with manual tools. I think the fact it was raining (so wet underfoot) and you have the routine of hosing mud off Winston, prevented any problems with possible quicklime.As you don't always remember to take your gloves you could do what my mum used to do with us as kids and thread fine knicker elastic though your jacket sleeves with the gloves sewn on (or use hook and loop to attach to the elastic)! Do you let someone know where you are going to before you leave the campsite? Just looking at those slippy rocks and grass gives me a shudder.(Sorry I'm of an age where things like that go through my head).Great views(eventually, thanks weather).Stay safe and see you on the next one.
@Roz.S

I am terrible for leaving my gloves back at the pod 😅 I'm also terrible at losing gloves so your idea might not be a bad shout 👍🏼 At this time of year, there's nobody to tell where I going; I'm the only person on the campsite 😅 The grass and rocks do look steeper and more dramatic on the video. In real life, it's nothing more than a large mound. I do carry a first aid kit (a human one and a dog one) and an emergency blanket. My phone had the location app 'what3words' and I've also configured the SOS settings and carry a powerbank to charge my phone if needed. 👍🏼 Thanks so much for watching and commenting.

Hi. Your 'vidiography' and small historical insights are great. A lot of people would not be interested in the history of where they're walking. I enjoy learning the significance of what I'm seeing. Also, intrigue would force me personally to learn more about what I'm seeing.🤔 Holes in mountains....you just gotta right?! @@Roz.S I grew up on rock, it's good to hear it on KZbin as most people seem to use teenage rap type 'music' I don't want to hear & which gets muted as it's so irritating. Definitely can't please everyone.

Hello to the other side of the globe! Hope you are enjoying your breakfast whilst watching Roz’s content. I really enjoy her vlogs, she’s just so natural and down to earth and although I’m a smidgen older, I do very similar adventures with my dog Tilly. We’re off to North Wales in April with my inflatable tent, when the weather is a bit milder…hopefully that is (planning to get a caravan next year). As you can see, the UK has some lovely places - worth a visit if you get the chance!

Ahh that would be an awesome place to wildcamp! I think if I had the right type of vehicle, e.g., a Ford Ranger or similar, I would still try to sneak up there at night and just enjoy laying on the flatbed looking at the stars. No one will be able to see from the road (as long as I have the lights off). But yeah...don't do that 😅 Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏼

Excellent video (as always). Am a tad jealous as I love Wales. But haven't been back since my son was a baby and that was nearly 17 years ago! At least we can visit it through you. BTW, I'm curious, I'm trying to place what accent you have. Yorkshire? I'm originally from the East Midlands, which is sort of similar but not quite. 27 years in France and I still have it. Bonne route to you and Winston.

Haha don’t worry, no one has ever managed to guess my accent correctly because I have moved quite a lot through my life. I originally grew up in the north east, near Middlesbrough with a Geordie accent. But I’ve since lived in Lancashire, Lincolnshire, and Cheshire, and had a short stint living in West Sussex. My accent is still northern, but I’ve lost the Geordie twang. Thanks so much for watching our video. Glad you enjoyed it.

@@Roz.S Am surprised. But thanks for answering my question. I teach English one to one and with us all being bilingual in our house, British accents always interest me. If we watch UK telly my son and daughter are now at the stage where they ask me what accent so and so has. I was born in North Warwickshire but spent much of my childhood in West Leicestershire until we moved to Leicester. So my accent is probably a mix of West Midlands & East Midlands. With Frenchisms thrown in thanks to my wife. Will look forward to your other adventures. We'll be heading to the UK soon (yearly visit), so my accent will probably get stronger. Time to stock up on UK goodies I can't get here too. 😂 Bon week-end!

You both always look like you're having a great time 👍🏼. I'm definitely going to buy a pod. I will live in it. What do you recon? I was thinking of a motorhome at first, but I have a decent diesel car, that could tow a pod. And easier to find a camping space.
@Roz.S
@Roz.S 4 ай бұрын
We do try to have a good time 😇 The only downside to full time pod life is that you don't have a shower or bathroom and it's not classed as being self-contained because you don't have your own fresh and grey water storage; those are pumped in and out from outside. And even though it says you can go 'off-grid' take that with a pinch of salt. Ideally, you need to be on a campsite. But you could, theoretically, live it in. 👍🏼

Yep, tabs are nice. I was looking at them too. But again, they're not self-contained and I'm not sure how well they perform off grid, so you may still need a campsite. And campsites have gone up to about £30 per night at the moment.

There was no redemption needed but it was a brave move to check out that scary dark room 😁 Reckon you have a decent future in Urban Exploration videos if you get fed up with travel and camping content 😝 Fascinating story about the history of the Tollbooths and the rebellion. Love the videos but did you do a risk assessment before entering the kilns? There is a possibility that oxygen denying gases could be in the confined spaces (carbon dioxide from acidic rain on limestone or even methane from rotten vegetation etc). I don't want to spoil your fun but try reading up on confined spaces risks. I've watched loads of vlogs where people just go in to flooded railway tunnels, caves, derelict buildings etc without realising how dangerous they can be. Don't take this comment the wrong way, just be safe and make more entertaining videos. Look after yourself and Winston.
