Really humbling to see the film shots at the end that didn't work out. I've ran into similar contrasty lighting situations and had the same mentality that the dynamic range of film would save the day, so it's something frustrating that I've been trying to work on too. Nevertheless, another batch of gorgeous images of Washington

This challenge is why ND grads exist and landscape guys used to carry massive filter kits full of different nd grads. The nd grad allows you to balance the sky and darker foreground with a single shot by reducing the sky exposure. If you think balancing that on a high dr film like portrait is hard, velvia only has about 5 stops of dr total.

I really really really recommend getting a 2 or even 3 stop gradient neutral density filter. Soft transition filters are good, but even hard transition filters are much better than nothing. It saves so many film photos that would otherwise have blown-out skies. The most flexible are the rectangular filters that can be slid to darken a selected fraction of the frame, but even a circular one that has the gradient in half the frame works great 90% of the time.

Gosh I'll tell ya what. I've lived on Hawaii, "oahu" for almost 3 years and Getting ready to move back to the mainland heading to Colorado in March 2021 and I just can not wait to leave Hawaii. It sure has it's charm and majestic feel to it, the sunsets and ocean is great, however it sure makes you feel small compared to the rest of the US or world. Feeling trapped in a way and sort of "I've explored it all sense" I can't wait to get out to the wilderness and explore and hopefully reignite my photography. Def feel that I've been not inspired as of the last few months. EDIT: finding this channel is def inspiration though. It's crazy. I've been into photography for over 10 years since 2004 and it's great to constantly learn and get inspiration from others. I shoot with a 500CM for film but I'm just LOVEING the Pentax 67 form factor and feel I get from viewing the images in that format. Just magical... Now I'm looking on Ebay for my 67 :)

Love these little photo trips to the outdoors, which until 10 years ago routinely did for myself. Now, not a chance, so I'll live this part of my photo life through your experiences. Shooting snow covered mountains in a landscape with the expectation of getting printable highlight details is tricky because you tend to evaluate the high contrast scene based on the surrounding forests, streams, etc. The very high dynamic range presented requires either a ton of experience or a spot meter and the will to put aside preconceptions and shoot what the meter tells you. That means a highlight reading, exposed no more than two stops "over exposed", and let the shadows take the hind most. Or, using an SLR and graduated ND filters to contract the dynamic range of the scene. In other words, shoot it like a slide film and discard all of the YT nonsense about rating at half box speed. A scenic with detailed highlights and murky shadows is emotionally acceptable most of the time. A scenic with overly light shadows and blown highlights is just bin fodder. Keep up the work.
@BraeHunziker4 жыл бұрын
Glad I can provide a bit of a vicarious experience for you Randall haha. And I appreciate the tips. Definitely need to invest in a high quality spot meter and learn more about properly exposing in situations like these.

Holy cow, Brea! Your video production chops totally set this channel apart. Beautiful footage and beautiful stills, too. Watching the really mathematical photographers like Nick Carver, they would probably use a spot meter and graduated density filter to bring down those skies. Or try exposure bracketing?
