On Baldpate some years ago when doing the NE111 on a wet day near the summit I did an unplanned glissade on the invisible algae, something you were careful not to do. Luckily I fetched up standing, no harm, but man…. Later, at the same shelter you showed I met a thru hiker who said he’d been in calorie deficit since Virginia. I offered him all my food, of course, but he turned down my gorp. Who knew you could get that tired of gorp! Thanks for posting videos of your hikes.

East Bald Pate is super sketchy when it's wet! I fell last year on wet rock climbing this mountain while I was hiking the GLT. I slid down and caught myself on a small bush before I went flying down completely. I dislocated my shoulder and had to get it back in. lol I sat there for a long time trying to decide what to do as I was solo as well. I ended up crawling up it on my hands and knees as I kept slipping and it was really scary! Great job! Glad you are safe!

Daaaaaaang!!! Now we know how the pioneers felt (except they didn't have high-tech gear). That was intense. But, what beautiful country Maine is! Omg, it is stunning. How did I not know this? Probably cuz I'm a west coaster. I do have ancestors from Maine but I know nothing about them. Time to get crackin' on that search cuz I am loving that state. I don't know how you put wet socks & shoes on every day. I would be whinin' like a baby. I don't mind getting wet, or hiking wet, but starting wet? No thanks! Blaze away, Nahamsha! Today is July 8th and if my calculations serve me correctly you should be @ Katahdin today, tmrw., or the next. I know you're close esp. cuz you're mind set is strong and you're super happy. This video proves that sometimes it would be smart to ditch the light trail running shoes and switch to some serious waterproof or Gore-Tex hiking boots. But you're doing a great job, and the light shoes do help you conserve energy. The steep climb in the driving winds, reminds me of a climb up Hamlin Ridge on my way to Baxter Peak, on one of my longest, most fun days at Katahdin when I was in my 30s. Roaring Brook almost to Chimney Pond, turn right to Hamlin Ridge to Hamlin Peak, across the saddle to Baxter Peak, Knife Edge to Pamola, down Helon Taylor trail back to Roaring Brook. We called it the "big loop", as opposed to the regular loop that skips Hamlin and just goes up Cathedral or Saddle trails to Baxter. As I aged, I mostly stopped doing Katahdin from Roaring Brook, and did it from staying at Chimney Pond. Much easier, less grueling, allows doing the Knife Edge on multiple days via various routes. It's such a shame that the AT ends at Baxter Peak without doing the Knife Edge, Hamlin, or Chimney Pond.

One would think though that even if fell in the river especially upstream from the AT crossing that (one) wouldn’t really get carried away by it because it’s kind of shallow, or that one could right oneself with relative aplomb. At the AT crossing itself it doesn’t appear to be that bad either although admittedly a second look does catch a glimpse of the far side where the water appears to be darker, and possibly thus, deeper. Just make sure to keep an eye upriver when crossing for the remote possibility of something like a log or other detritus which could result in impact.
