Pattani, Songkhla, Narathiwat and Yala are the four provinces that are ”dangerous”. The reason why is because the people of Pattani wants to be independent like they used to be. Thailand don’t want the provinces to be independent therfore there are many bombings. Thailand blame us ppl for the bombings, but we locals know that it is the government that is doing these stuff. They want to create a bad image of Pattani so that other countries don’t want to support Pattanis independency. But pattani is actually a really beautiful place. We have our own culture, language and our ppl are really nice. Don’t be suprised if you see food like roti and nasi ____. Our culture and language is similar to Malaysia.

Satun (Setul in Malay) was a part of Kedah, not Patani. But the whole Kedah was under Thai suzereinty then, and a lot of Thais moved and settled there. So whwn Thailand made borser agreement with the British in 1909, Satun stayed with Thailand. I think Patani had much stronger memory of political independence and cultural diffrences, hence the struggle has been much more intense there.

Remember, in Hatyai, you have to bargain to half the price they quote to you. From my past experience, only in this city of Hatyai, they always quote you double the price for items of clothing, shoes, leather wallet and bags, etc... However, all the food items are mostly more or less fixed in prices.

To be safe in Southern Thailand avoid hanging out near military post, checkpoints or roadblocks. Generally speaking those locations are the main target for attacks or bombing by the Malay separatist movement in Southern Thailand. But I think right now the peace negotiation between Thai Government and the separatist is ongoing and ceasefire by both military forces are being enforced. So, it should be safe. But still be cautious particularly if you are near Thai military post, checkpoints or roadblocks.
