During the pandemic I was leaving trail and summit names out of many of my videos due to issues with massive overcrowding on the trail, as well as, issues in regards to what I would consider uneducated or irresponsible hiker behavior. The most notable of which was trash, and human waste / toilet paper I was finding directly on, or just off, trail. I kept some of the trail and location names in this video.If you are using this video for planning purposes, please use the trail responsibly and try to follow leave no trace principles. It only takes one person not doing so to ruin it for everyone. If you are a newer hiker please watch this video before heading out on trail: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpnHaHhqp6x8raM Here is an article about the issue with trash and human waste specifically in the Whites www.nhpr.org/post/trouble-trails-forest-service-grapples-crowds-trash-and-human-waste#stream/0 Another article about Max Patch (an iconic part of the Appalachian Trail) and the issues occurring there www.citizen-times.com/story/news/local/2020/09/23/max-patch-residents-campers-creating-safety-hazards-mountain/5858936002/ Here you can learn about leave no trace (LNT) principles lnt.org/why/7-principles/ www.nps.gov/articles/leave-no-trace-seven-principles.htm

Great report! Wonderful shots, positive outlook and being an early bird, has its benefits. No blackflies, too good to be true.

Glad to see you posting. Glad to hear that you are feeling stronger. The food is key. Fasting every night for about 12 hours helps. I have many more trips around the sun than you but medical check ups are really useful. Ah yes, the self-righteous pilgrims. I offered food to them one time but apparently I'm not good enough to 'break bread with'. I just watched your PA/NJ/NY AT videos - I'm currently section hiking this area. Thanks for posting.

I had an identical experience going down Kinsman Pond in May. The rest of the trails had trace snow and ice and then it was post-holing 3 miles down up to our hips at times with the brook roaring underneath the snow. Look forward to seeing more of your adventures this summer.

When we lived in NH, I skied at Cannon Mountain. It was way below zero one time and the snow really crunched coming out of the Tram at the top. I was carrying a huge video camera. This was way before cell phone cameras. Wow, that shelter was really nice. It looked real cozy but probably cold too. Love your videos. John from MI

The Kinsman and Garfield shelters are both, I believe, pretty new. They are very well taken care of and it shows. I can imagine being up on Cannon with a big old school shoulder mounted rig haha

Chris, you look great! The work really shows man!! So awesome to see ya out again! You’re gettin me excited for my trip with my oldest on the 4th,5th and 6th. It’s funny… you mentioned you had covid during a trip in the beginning of last season and didn’t know it. Same exact thing happened to me last June on a trip with my oldest. I was sick as a dog but still stoked to be out. My daughter was razzing me on the trail because i was going so slow🤣. She ended up getting it a few days later and was mad at me but then when she was helping my wife care for my late mother in law everyone got covid but her so she was able to take care of everyone during that time. Crazy how things go sometimes. Chris.. i was gonna ask you what you thought about stealth camping. Ive had to change plans as far where we were camping twice because of nutters staying at the shelter site we were planning to camp at. Once in Vermont and once in the bigelows. I just feel like a lot of the shelter sites are magnets for lulus. Anyway… just wanted your thoughts on that. Obviously no fire, poop in a cathole way away from trail and water. Typical LNT stuff. Just wondering sir. Take care and thanks again. NQU

Ya the trip I had it was the tunnel brook trail one. I was intending to hit Mt Moosilauke on the 2nd day and I started up the mountain and something just felt off. I turned around, got back to car, was shivering the whole way home. Woke up the next morning and knew immediately had covid. It sucked haha. I am all about responsible stealth camping, I mainly stayed at the Kinsman site as I knew its still off season and I assumed nobody would be there on a Sunday night and it worked out to be true.

Enjoyed your talk about the importance of getting back into shape after a lax period. Also reminds you that if you are going to go "ultralight" -- that needs to include your body weight too!

As someone pursuing all of the trails in the White Mountain Guide, it's just good technique to use loops wherever possible. Really enjoy your videos..

Im doing the same currently. I have actually debated buying an electric or regular bike that I can park at random trailheads so I can bike back to my car to make getting from point a to b easier in that regard

I’m planning a variation of this next weekend (Kinsmans via Fishin Jimmy / Cascade Brook) to get more AT section miles and add to my NH48. It looked like you parked overnight at the Basin lot. On other hikes I’ve parked farther South in the lot South of Liberty Spring trail. Is Basin an ok spot for winter overnights and does it have a paystation or is it free?

Great video! Did you hang a tarp in the door way of the shelter to keep out some light? Thank you.
@ChrisGoesOutdoors Жыл бұрын
that was already there when I got there. I think they leave it up for use in winter as the wind seemed to blow in a bit

So much easier without extra weight; you look great. We're doing Mooselauke and Belknap range in 3 weeks when we visit NH, and I wish I was lighter. Climbing up those White Mtn boulders is brutal enough as it is. Do you still hike with Casey?

I've tried to get her out essentially since we've left the AT annnnnd well 🤷🏼♂️

What camera would you suggest to someone who wants to start filming their hikes, I want to start making a video fairy for myself
@ChrisGoesOutdoors Жыл бұрын
to be honest I would just use a cellphone or maybe a gopro. If you find yourself not liking the quality you could move up from there but cellphone would suffice for probably 90% of people
@savetheday88 Жыл бұрын
@@ChrisGoesOutdoors ok cool, I think I’ll try my phone and I might look for maybe a later model GoPro like a 7 or maybe a used model to save a little money so I appreciate the advice, keep with the clips, I love the white mountains and head up there once a year for hiking( love lonesome lake) so I always enjoy your treks!

Is there somewhere I can see all the rules for camping and stuff up there? Like can you just setup camp anywhere or how does it work I'm just getting into this thing.
@ChrisGoesOutdoors Жыл бұрын
There are some designated sites along some trails. I would highly recommend picking up the trail maps for the Whites. There are some fairly basic rules to follow up there otherwise, heres a link www.fs.usda.gov/activity/whitemountain/recreation/camping-cabins/?actid=34&recid=74405
