Hello! Welcome back to my channel.
Went out on another solo adventure, this time at the Tipi Platform Camp.
To see this platform build visit my husbands channel: • Full Treehouse Platfor...
*This is private land**Do not take boughs or green wood from a park or crown land*
I cooked a delicious camp dinner for one and had a blast under my tarp listening to the rain and the thunder. I stayed dry and woke up early to the sun peaking up over the trees and the birds singing me awake.
My peaceful morning was then abruptly interrupted when I discovered an unwanted visitor. Around 6 am I found a tick feeding on me. I held it captive while I tried to continue my morning the best I could. I made bacon and my famous crispy coconut strawberry pancakes. Hope you enjoy. xo.
I submitted the tick for testing and was prescribed antibiotics.
Instagram: caitlin_timber
MY GEAR:
Tick kit I have (use the tweezers): amzn.to/2PbnKkD
My boots: amzn.to/3gYwgQm
My sleeping bag: amzn.to/322giP7
My packs and tarp: www.frostriver.com
TICK SAFETY:
- wear long sleeved tight fitted clothing and closed toe footwear. Tuck your socks into your pants (you don't want any exposed skin).
- wear light coloured clothing (so you can better spot a tick if it gets on you)
- if your country allows it, clothing with permethrin is good to wear in areas that have a large tick population.
- use an insect repellent containing DEET on your clothes and exposed skin (follow directions on package).
- regularly check your body (especially hidden areas such as back of ears, armpits, back of knees, groin, scalp).
- Place outdoor clothing and bedding in dryer on high heat for 30 min to prevent any live ticks from coming home with you.
If you discover a tick feeding on you:
Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible (do not grasp the body) and pull the tick out slowly with even pressure to ensure mouth parts are removed and body is not crushed.
Wash area with soap and warm water
Put the tick into a container with a lid or a sealed plastic bag
Bring the tick to your local health unit for testing and visit a doctor. Make sure you tell them how long you think the tick could have been on you - the timing is important for health professionals to rate the risk of transmission of lyme disease or other bacteria.
DO NOT
Grasp around bloated belly and squeeze the tick
Use a match, heat or chemicals to try and remove it

@@TheTimberLife I'm 55. You are a lost generation that needs to come back. I have no idea how I got to watch a video like this (recommendation) but it was kind of jaw dropping. Genuine, authentic, female. A https rare species these days. And, as others have mentioned, don't call yourself stupid. Making mistakes is how we learn. The only stupid one, is someone calling you stupid. This is an upside down world. Nature is how normal should be.

@@TheTimberLife As someone who lives in a tick infested area, I can tell you they arent that big of a deal. They have to be on you for 24 hrs to give you lyme disease. I always feel them a lot faster than that. Then i just yank the little suckers off. Its confusion that makes people think they will leave their heads in you. They wont. Humans have really weak tissue paper like skin compared to dogs and cats. They scratch with claws that would shred us after all. So their skin WILL rip a ticks head off and keep it inside. With your skin, they are more likely to take a chunk with them. They do that a lot to me. #themoreyouknow lol

That was really cool. Don't fret about that tick. I was 7th Infantry Division in the early 90's and had a tick in the absolute worst place a man can get a tick. What a beautiful setting, love that platform and tarp! Ticks are everywhere and there's only so much you can do. I can't hardly walk out in the yard and definitely not our back field without the potential. Checking yourself is difficult, obviously requires a mirror but is the best defense. Caught quickly you can pop the evil things off pretty easy.

Very far from stupid, and in reality it's just that ticks love company and find ways to sneek in and join in the feast of life regardless of how vigilant you are. Don't knock yourself, there are plenty out there that will try to do that for you, and the truth is, as your video shows, you are not afraid to push your own limits and/or to take care of yourself while doing so. Great video.

It's a phrase women grow up hearing often, and throughout their lives. What is most strange is that it's not the woman who actually has the inferiority complex.

@Dan Trebune Is it any wonder when men/boys always find a way to put them down? This woman is a lot brighter than many guys I know and wouldn't even know to check themselves for tics or how to build a fire. Plus she films and edits her work, no too small a detail in itself.
@piraipirai73

@Dan Trebune it's because women are always criticised for so much they do, just look at the top comment. A lot of men are too busy judging women instead of helping and encouraging them, especially when it comes to "typically male"-stuff like construction or tech-stuff.

well maybe because of the comments similar to this and the amount of unnecessary compliments and love that you show to a child make it so hard to count you as an intelligent person so the negative comments has big impact even though they are very rare.

I agree. Having the wherewithal to erect your shelter on a raised platform, hike everything in, climb up and down a lot (keeping you in wonderful shape), and fixing what appeared good meals is inspiring. Avon use to make a product called "skin so soft" that was fragrancy, but it kept ticks from latching on. They may have crawled, but they would not latch on. I used it a lot in search training and on actual search missions. Doing the frequent tick searches, was a great idea. Therefore you are by no means "stupid". Good to see the mindset change about women camping, especially in the wild. Enjoyed your video, young lady.

Great video, thank you for sharing! I love the forest, been spending a lot of time in the woods the last few years here in France (planting and taking care of fir and larch trees). I've been bitten several times by ticks, they're much smaller here, quite hard to see, just today when I got home I had one on me but luckily it hadn't yet bitten and I managed to get it off! So you're not stupid for having been bitten by a tick, as for the bedding we live and learn (I initially thought it was a good idea then remembered the creepy crawlies!) but you could've picked up the tick somewhere else anyway! Cheers :)

Great video! Thanks for posting. You’re definitely not stupid....everyone makes mistakes and ticks can literally be anywhere including underneath your shelter. If you’re gonna be in the woods for any length of time it’s bound to happen. Luckily the odds are in your favor for not contracting anything crazy.

I love the smell of lemon grass it feel's both cleansing and awakening to me. But Eucalyptus to me is like a gift from the Gods. not so much the smell but if steamed it will do more for your sinus than you can imagine and as for the headaches that come with it , you can forget those too. it's quicker and more relieving than any medications i've ever tried. I swear by the stuff and as i said i'm not really a fan of the smell. 100% natural oil though don't be fooled by the knock offs , they don't work as well at all.

Thank you for the video. Just to help alleviate your mental anguish (although I do recommend you get checked regardless) generally the ticks need to remain embedded for ~ 24-72 (depending on the type of tic) hours in order to transmit disease. Which is why frequent tic checks are recommended. Coconut oil, I will try it some time. Thanks again.

How far did she have to haul all that gear? The cynic in me says not far or not alone. Easily she was carrying 120 ltrs of volume in three bags and probably close to 25-35 kgs of gear.🤔. Too many of these videos don't show the effort or the background assistance involved in this sort of camping. If I'm wrong, then more power to you. Smoking your bedding boughs and tick spray would help some.
