Lovely solo, but it sounds as though it was recorded in the Bilbao State Sanitorium for heavy smokers.

Fantastic. THIS is the sound that I've been looking for. The flugel and trumpet are fine, but this? Yes!

A hangszeres zene világát is elvitték a XIX. században mindenhová.

RE: Posthorn solo Mahler 3. Completed 6/10/1896 Ernst Decsey associated with Mahler in later years and said to understand this passage one had to understand Lenau’s poem Lieblich war die Maiennacht (Lovely was the May night). In the poem as in the music a lonely sound drifts through the woods. When Mahler & Decsey spoke Mahler was most surprised that Decsey knew of this as this was the poem Mahler had in mind for this passage but Mahler had not discussed it with anyone. The poem also bears the title of “Der Postillion” (The Stagecoach Driver) and that also appears in Mahler’s score above that movement at the start. Another poem by Lenau “Das Posthorn” relates to later in that movement. As a professional trumpet player in London for over 20 years, and having studied Mahler for over 30 years, I think I can draw some conclusions here. 1. There is much scratching out on the score next to the solo line (WA2BA) mess it looks like, but under this it clearly states Flugelhorn. 2. We all know Mahler was immersed in all literature of his time especially of the metaphysical and the search for nature and God and the reason for being. The poem was the inspiration and documented so on the score which send’s mixed directions. 3. Anyone who worked under Mahler came up with the same comments. A. He was a perfectionist and all around him had to strive for the same ideal. He was a task master and nothing but nothing was to go wrong in his concerts especially opera, although he was in charge many times of mediocre performances of his own works (which is hardly surprising for the time). 4. A straight posthorn of the time (with no valves) would not have been able to play this solo well or in tune and probably not at all (?). Given this basic and Mahler’s exacting standards it’s very unlikely this was played on a Posthorn of the working nature of a Stagecoach Post Office delivery type. 5. The premier of Mahler 3 was given in Krefeld June 9th 1902 with 2 orchestras from Cologne and enough musicians could not be found to fit the score. So, players from the local military were co-opted in for the premier which had 2 days’ rehearsal. But one draws on the probable, one of these military bandsmen had been told to bring a flugel on the day which matched the overall ideal sound on the day in lontano. 6. So in the 20th and 21st C we have had many developments in instrument designs to get around this from valve versions of the Jagger trumpet and variations on the Deutche B trumpet. 7. Flugel horn would have been known to Mahler from a child, his town in Iglau had a military base and band, and he referred to it as such later on the 3rd. 8. Given all the evidence above it seems very likely that between published revisions and editors, the poem “Postilion” has gotten into the instrumentation somehow, given the above my opinion is Mahler had a Flugel horn in mind from the very start to realise the sound in the poem.

I agree completely about the flugelhorn. But why not use a real posthorn with valves nowadays when the brass instrument building technique is so far advanced. I for one hear the difference between a flugelhorn and a posthorn/corno da caccia/fürst pless horn. Granted, it's very subtle but there nonetheless. On the posthorn, especially some of the higher notes are somewhat brighter and sing better, or are less muffled than the flugel. Or maybe the way of playing the posthorn is like this, and there really is no difference acoustically between the flugelhorn and the posthorn type instruments other than some bends in tubing?

@@McJays The valved posthorn would have a much smaller bell and would be smaller, so to me it would sound very different than a flugelhorn
