@@rusalexander1757 Rus Alexander, I'm playing a journaling RPG right now called The Adventurer created by James Chip. I'm having a blast. All you need are the rules, a deck of cards, and something to write with (either pen and paper or your computer will work just fine). You travel through a fantasy landscape and the cards tell you what places you go to, what events happen along the way, what people and creatures you meet, and what things you find. Use your imagination to fill in the details and make journal entries about your adventures. You build a story, and the narrative is everything.

I come from playing World of Warcraft alot, but have gotten tired of it over the years. I'm really excited about the prospect of creating and playing in ones own adventure and fantasy world. The biggest obstacle to me has been figuring out where to start lol. I'm going to go with the Basic Fantasy book you recommend, i like the idea of having more creative freedom in terms of character creation. Thanks for the video! Really detailed and helpful to those of us without much experience in this field of gaming :)

Thanks for all the great information and explaining it all, really appreciate it. Was never aware that you could do solo RPG. I used to play D&D (old school) in the 80's with my buddies. Really miss playing. Not enough friends to get together anymore and everyone is scattered around my state. I was the one that brought all the miniatures to our games and always interested in creating some terrain, but never did. Now I want to try that. Just got back into painting miniatures lately also. Have to look for the books you mentioned.

Thanks for the video. I have been wanting to get into Table Top RPGing for quite awhile. I purchased Basic Fantasy, Mythic & Palladium. I haven't played any system before & really have no experience or reference so I just ended up reading these books without much understanding in the way certain things play out. I just ended up reading instead of any actual playing which is disappointing. I also discovered Open Legend RPG. The core rules are free online openlegendrpg.com/. Like I said, I don't have any experience with RPing but two things appealed to me a lot from this system. #1- One system for any setting or genre & #2 - The exploding dice sounds fun. These two things are important because I want to try & get a few friends interested & play with them but also play solo as we probably won't be able to play every week. Maybe twice a month. I could use Open Legend for any genre they are interested in playing & I think we would enjoy the exploding dice. I would like to have as much understanding of this system as possible before starting up a game with others but the problem is that I think I need to start with them to learn. Reading is only getting me so far. Maybe I should just start with them even though I don't know what I'm doing & just learn that way but I do want it to be fun & awesome for them if they are taking the time to play. Is there a way to learn a system solo to get a better grasp on it before getting friends involved or should I just take what limited knowledge I have & jump in with them & we all learn it together? They haven't ever played either but that does sound more fun. Open Legend also has a free starting adventure called A Star Once Fallen so I should probably use that. It says it's a "Learn-by-Play adventure.

I've started running a solo rpg and I have a question about how you would physically play this. On a normal social game with other players, you talk to other people. If you're on your own, what do you do? Do you write your adventures down on a piece of paper? Do you simply run scenarios through your head? Do you talk to yourself to verbalize the narrative? I myself ran things in my head then wrote them down after, but found that I ended up writing a novel!
@artichokedip9150

I will keep notes of important key points if I need to reference back to them. As far as meeting NPC's reactions between the characters I personally do not write that down unless you want to. When it comes to your scenarios or battle sequences this is where I stress having a good 3D representation really helps because playing solo RPG is like a hybrid between miniature skirmish and traditional RPG trying to keep track of everything in your head would become very daunting and minis really help with who is where movement and so forth to where you only have to worry about hp point tracking spell effects and so on. The thing to remember about solo play is you have the ability to change anything you want to suit your gaming taste. If you were to play in a large group would you remember every conversation or the key points that affect the storyline to reach the main objective? The point I am trying to make is instead of writing every single interaction down let your imagination go wild and write down the things you feel may be important to you later on. I recently started playing the original AD&D Temple of elemental evil when you start out in the Village of Hommlet you have to interact with a large amount of NPC's until you meet Elmo I did not write any interaction down just keynotes when my characters met Elmo only the important key points were written down. Elmo agreed to local employment, sent characters to Church of St Cuthbert for the first assignment which was to escort a wagon of important wares expected to arrive late. The chief priest knew the caravan would most likely come under attack which when I rolled my percentage dice it if fact did by 6 orcs three who ambushed my characters while the other three raided the last wagon after defeating the orcs and returning to the church this verified my characters intentions were true following the game flow my characters were being tested by Elmo to see if their intentions were true to adventure and gain wealth or were they cultist there to spy on the Villagers and report back to there superiors. Keep it simple this is solo have fun don't overburden yourself I hope this helps and game on my friend

@@artichokedip9150 makes sense, thanks. Yep I'm using minis and battle maps (which I got from my miniatures board games like Descent) for battle simulations. In fact, this is the reason i wanted to play rpg solo. My current group's DM loathes minis (he believes in pure imagination) which is fine but I like visuals. And it also helps clarify positions etc. So while I enjoy the sessions, I feel like I want more out of the games.

Your welcome I prefer minis over the theater of the mind because if I can see it I can kill it LOL. I like minis and tiles because I can see everything line of sight cover for my characters and so on. I just played through a scenario in the new D&D box set the essentials kit. Using dungeon tiles terrain and minis brought the shrine of Talos to life rather than a two-dimensional picture in a book of a map. Try running a small scenario first maybe a 3-5 room dungeon crawl with two characters take your time with it. Once you get the ball rolling introduce a third character and see how things run for you. Start small don't jump straight into a huge campaign at first build-up to it. I hope this info works for you and you have many hours of great gaming.

I agree with all your philosophies so much, with all these new mobile and mmo games online where it's all geared to get the consumer to purchase more more more. Loot crates, dlc, expansions, etc. I used to enjoy video games a lot but they are starting to get very stale these years. Occasionally there's a good one, but why get sucked into that world where I'm playing a game where ONLY the few programmed things with so many restrictions can occur, versus a tabletop roleplaying game of my choice where anything is possible? I am learning to solo to get better at GMing and to have fun on my own making my own stories!

I dont really know how I ended here, but nice video. I began to play tabletop rpg around 1991. I never really played or liked D&D. I was more into MERP and all the games of Chaosium( RuneQuest, Cthulhu, Stormbringer...) After a long break I am back with my friends in a private place where we play with a depth of stories, drama and acting never imagined back then. I really enjoyed game-books in the eighties. and I play sometimes pc rpg games. But I didnt know there was a public for solo RPG. In any case, I guess it is more related with the game-books and videogames experience(or even writing literature) than with real Role Playing...wich needs human counterparts. All that said, as I enjoy writing and creating worlds, maybe I give it a try.

I use Basic Fantasy with Mythic, and I take the perspective of the GM and use Mythic to understand how the PCs interact with a prepared module/dungeon. This is almost like play-testing work before unleashing it on actual players. B/X D&D is a good fit since the rules are not so crunchy and combat doesn't take for ever. It fits well with Mythic to create a interesting narrative. It also works well in developing a campaign, creating a world, and stretching ones' imagination. I pre-create all the maps and dungeons, and ask the questions from Mythic on how, and where the PCs go within the map I have created. This is almost like a push-your-luck mechanic.

I live as a solitary hermit and never knew one could play board games and RPGs alone. I play a lot of RPG video games but sometimes I get tired of being microed to death, but will still play them. So I never played a regular RPG before. I have played a mystery board game that had cards, dice, and miniatures, a long time ago when I had some fairweather friends and really liked it. Ok so I understand that one can play alone now but I have a few newb questions. So with an RPG how do miniatures fit in? like, do they work like a card and dice game?. Can I learn both types like a card, and dice and RPG and would they fit in as an Rpg?. Also, I really like fantasy like Lord of the Rings along with science fiction fantasy like something with space, planets, and warriors but with a fantasy magical twist. Is there anything along these lines for a solo person either as a board game or RPG?. I am a very visual person and is probably why I stick it out with video games so are their kits that fit these criteria that has it all like miniatures, dice, book, maps, boards etc? that is simple to learn as the ones you have recommended or should I stick with the simple ones and start out with mythic and others?. It's just that I am a very visual person basically wanting something to look at to spark my mind lol. I also have thought about getting into painting models as well. if anyone could answer these newby newb questions it would be greatly appreciated. So far these videos are helping me to at least understand what I would be geting into and they are great.

Miniatures will give you a visual representation on the game table which helps bring everything into perspective with combat as far as when your character or characters are compared to where the enemies are at movement can be tracked and you have a visual representation of line of sight, cover this is if you enjoy using miniatures. The solo RPG are about you experience a adventure were you are IN. When you prepare and chose the adverture and you play it, you are OUT of it. If it is not a problem to you, go on. Create your adventure by your own, do the map, the locations, the NPC's. But, for the most players, the surprise and unpredictability are the core. So, a system that allows you to generate "random" locations, random events and NPC's are the choice. In this case Mythic are the "father" of the DMless (Play without a Dungeon Master person).

First, decide what genre of gaming you are interested in medieval fantasy science fiction as examples. Then purchase your game system if you are new to tabletop gaming I would suggest checking out basic fantasy. The main core rule book is about 5 USD or visit( www.basicfantasy.org) and you can download the book for free to a PDF the next thing you will need is a polyhedral dice set you can find those anywhere cheap. Amazon or eBay is where I suggest looking you will have a large selection at very reasonable prices. Become familiar with the basic rules and character creation than create a character try a small scenario first maybe a three-room dungeon. Place monsters in one room a trap in the other and then make a list of ten different things ranging from monsters, treasure to traps numbering them one through ten when you get to the 3rd room roll the 10 sided die and see what is in there. If you enjoy that experience welcome to the solo RPG world I hope this helps and game on my friend

While I think the solo style works if the system is simple, but i don't know if I should just meet up with people to play a system. I might decide on Basic Fantasy or White box and if you have heard of dungeon world it can't really be played solo because of a mecahnic called bonds where players have a bond with another player unless you tweak the game. I played basic fantasy using the pdf as a 'demo' with a group and I had fun.

Have just come across your excellent channel and am interested in solitaire RPG but no real experience. I have the base rules for the old MERP (ice) and a few modules as well. So in your opinion would this be a good place to start or too complex for a first RPG and better to go with the ones you have suggested?

Nice suggestions. Fabled lands is fun and you don’t die so randomly. I got the first 6 books in the series. They all sort of interconnect. 4 Against Darkness and its supplements, is a definite must. Lots of fun!

Hay have you tried the adventure Crafter? It's made to be compatible with mythic and is solo friendly you can use as an solo oracle scene generator or a idea inspiration

Are you ever tempted to *cheat if things aren't going your way? Bump your weapon damage by a point, 'accidentally' find some gold, etc.? *I use the word 'cheat' loosely since I know that you could always rationalize something about its single-player, etc. blah blah blah so who cares, but I'm just curious if it happens. Not trying to be malicious.

Hello, i am confused on what you mean by solo rpg. In the 1980's i played The fantasy books Fighting Fantasy by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone. You needed dice and character sheet and the story gave you choices on which direction you wanted the character to go. How do you play a solo rpg that you have created? Sorry for my not understanding.

The pathfinder rulebook is not only a players handbook but also the "Dungeon Masters Guide". And you can find all the rules from other PF books and lots of 3rd party for free legally online. More free stuff than Dnd5e. For both PF 1E and 2E.

Thanks for the video, very informative. I have a few questions, some are personal so don't feel like you have to respond if you don't feel like it. First, when I ask around online about solo rpg, lots of people recommend choose your own adventure type of books, to the point I wonder if there's really a difference. Is there more to a solo rpg adventure than to have your hero facing randomized elements? I feel that the role playing aspect gets lost when there isn't another person to respond or react to the things you're imagining. It almost turns into as writing exercise where you act and react to your own plans and ideas. Perhaps more like a writer really than a player. Maybe I'm wrong here but I would love your take on what you gain and lose when sole rpging compared to gaming with a group. The second question is a bit more personal. You mentioned you've played solo for many years now and I would like to know why you seem to prefer that way to approach rpgs instead of the more traditional group of players. Today specially when you have so many ways to find people online to play, I feel this must comes dow to personal preference Last but not least do you enjoy the solo adventures of Tunnels&Trolls? Do you consider those rpgs or cyoa books? Specially the pocket solos they have. Thanks again for your videos, you offer lots of interesting content. Cheers.

I have to say it depends on the person really I had been playing D&D solo for about six years before I played in a real group. I really stunk for me. The story lacked nothing made any sense as far as why are the bad guys trying to kill us there was no story to sustain it. I was 18 at that time I returned to solo play and was happy with my hobby again about 5 years ago I had joined a group to play Pathfinder hoping the experience would be different. It was the same thing no story to sustain why are all these trying to kill our characters I thought maybe it was just the system. I joined a group playing a spin off game of the call of Chutulu the story never seemed to get anywhere week after week anytime you tried to pursue what you wanted the game master would railroad you to his very slow boring story that never went anywhere. I returned to solo and have not left and have no intention to either . As far as the randomization element gives the game or games a way to branch out in the storyline that can spawn more new stories for the current game if you choose or a different one later that makes it way different than just writing but that to its core is what any rpg system really is a story telling system. I like T&T and its a fun game but I really enjoy D20 system games or percentiles systems. I enjoy my own created adventures I enjoy having a antagonist and a protagonist in my adventures. Pre printed adventures you have to read the story first so you know how it will possibly end where the traps are so on and so forth. This takes away a lot with randomized tables in my own adventure your guess is as good as mine where the next pit trap may show up in my game. Which is why I enjoy solo rpg gaming so much its not for everyone. Thanks for the great comment and game on my friend Cheers.

From my expeience, the games in the 2000's didn't become "more complex", in my opinion. Compared to what they were back in the 80's, they were dirt easy. What I witnessed was in the 2000's was games with a HUGE increase in exposition that kind of began in the late 90's, and a gradual decrease in complexity. The RPG's that we have out now are nowhere NEAR as compicated as the systems that we used back in the 80's. They're simple beasts. Nowadays, it seems like the game systems have been whittled down to only a small handful of very simple systems designed to be used very quickly for improvisation and you can sometimes find pretty much the same chart in multiple games. Back in the day, there a few hundred games, each with their own game system, each with 1000 unique charts and graphs and mathematics behind each one. The complexity I see is in the amount of exposition and maybe sheer amount of extras (IE, character class and crap feat based overload that plagues modern D&D, for instance. I miss when D&D wasn't all about feats and when there wasn't all this choice. There's too much of a muchness. It's a video game anime now.). But the actual game systems themselves for the game-master to run the game have simplified significantly over the years, for the most part.

I just downloaded Basic Fantasy for free and am looking forward to reading and starting to play this game solo and then with my sister. I would appreciate your thoughts.

The two zeros on the percentile are zero not 100. 100 is 90 on percentile and 10 on the normal one. Then 1 is 00 on percentile and 1 on normal. Good video btw. Very infromational and I'm considering solo gaming cause I'm bored and my friends are busy with school
