Cool video. My dad and I sailed from Berkeley, California to Honolulu, Hawaii in 1985 on a 25 foot Nordic folk boat. We used only celestial navigation and compass.(no such thing as GPS back then) It took 28 days to Hawaii and we had planned to go to Tahiti after that, but we stayed in Hawaii instead. Awesome story thanks for sharing! Did you guys sail on the intentions of never coming back?
@brianwalsh79315 жыл бұрын
uterotourettes15, no, actually we intended to sail around the world. But that was when we had the 30’ Tahiti Ketch. That boat could have made it around the world. My dad lost that one in his second divorce, so he bought the 25’ Nordic Folkboat. A beautiful little wooden boat with a lap strake hull. That one was pretty squirrely in higher winds and didn’t lend itself to self-steering, but it was built sturdy and we sailed it up and down the coast to see if she could handle the open ocean. We decided to just try the passage to Hawaii and see how that goes. My dad had single-handed the Tahiti to and from Hawaii twice, so he knew what to expect. We hit a few storms and got banged around some. Then just as we got close to the tropics we were utterly becalmed for about 5 days. I think we drifted backwards for about a hundred miles. The tradewinds got us moving west again. We spotted Haleakala on Maui and decided to cruise to Oahu and dock at Ala Wai harbor where my dad knew the harbor master from previous trips. That was a great adventure but that little boat kicked our butts. My dad got a job on Oahu as a sailing instructor and I worked in the boatyard. I guess Hawaii kinda grew on us and we decided to sell the boat and stay for a while. My dad got married to a Canadian tourist and they retired up in Canada. Sick of the relentless tropical heat mostly. I’ve been here since 85’ but I travel to Canada to visit dad. Anyway, sailing across the Pacific in a small boat is not for the faint of heart. But when you get to your destination alive, there’s nothing in the world that compares to that experience. Aloha.

@jisang The average depth of the ocean is 4km deep (If we have technology to get people 11km under, 4km is "nothing") . It still takes 20-30km out from land to reach that depth. Say along ALL coastlines we put a 25km reach of exploration, that'd maybe account for 2-3% (my guess), and with all the expeditions going on over the past 150 years would account for the other half making roughly 5%. Perhaps I'm talking out of my ass but all of this surely equates to more than just a single percent. this comment epitomizes what I mean when i tell people that outside of maybe a few special forces, US soldiers are not really "warriors"... they just pledge themselves to be willing to kill innocent people "for the good benefits". Not to mention, those same people who support them and often are or have been those people themselves then have no issue turning around and berating say, for random example Brian Laundrie or Charles Manson or Ted Kazynski, and calling them villains. No. American soldiers are a bunch of softies. Hence, this comment.

I live on Maui and just picked up a free 23' Erickson on Craigslist which I am currently rebuilding, so your stuff is kinda speaking to me right now. Anyway I noticed the date of the videos and realized that you're probably still here in the islands so I gotta give some aloha. If you need a hot shower, a night or two on dry land, do some laundry and maybe one good BBQ dinner, feel free to respond. You could probably find a safe mooring at either Kahului or Ma'alaea harbors for a day or two.

I can’t even begin to comprehend why this video has 1.6k dislikes, this man just sailed across the pacific by himself and people had the audacity to dislike what the hell.

I know, I wish they could be forced to explain themselves. Like, if you ever wanted to thumb down, your camera would automatically switch on and a robot voice would instruct you to give a reason or a $100 dollars would be deducted from your phone bill. I could be quite a cathartic thing for people to see what they are projecting. Or it would limit the negative thumbs.

@Dictator Kirby god cannot be proven to be true or false, real or fake, because it can't be observed with the scientific method. God is a belief, and beliefs require faith, not evidence. Don't be a jerk online, you know what you're doing. You're just trying to hurt others and that sucks.

Dictator Kirby Think of it this way. I believe in God and know where I’m going where I die if he is real. You know where you’re going since you’re a nonbeliever? If I’m wrong, I’ve wasted a lifetime. If you’re wrong, you’ve wasted an eternity.

In the 1970's there was an interview of a sailor like Sam ,in Cruising World Magazine ... They asked him about his 'motivation' for ocean sailing. His response was, "I want to be the first person to sail around the world, and not write a book about it".

His speech gets slower and slower as the trip progresses. Looks like hard work, but a great sense of accomplishment when he arrives in Hawaii. 27 days in a wallowing small boat not for me. I've had fantasies about sailing across the ocean, but this is the reality of it.... thanks Sam.

I have a 30' sailboat and I would have a tough time but could at least hold more water, didn't see if he had a tarp setup to collect fresh water to refill the tanks, also it was 80 deg and he is sitting in the heat, that will boil your brain (as we saw) would have put on my bathing suit and let the waves hit me.
