In this video from May and July 2020 I flew my DJI Mavic Mini Drone out of Breakwater Cove in Monterey California before launching my Solo Skiff to go fish the squid beds outside Pacific Grove.
I caught squid using a squid sabiki by slowly jigging it up and down at the bottom along the squid nests. After catching the squid I cruised over to a spot labeled "Lingcod Fishing" and dropped down a big live squid on a bucktail lure. I lost a nice live squid to some small blue rockfish so I decided to switch it up and put a 1 ounce anchovy colored hook up bait on my Shimano Tranx 300 reel on a Phenix M1 inshore rod and jig the bottom for a mixed variety of rockfish including what I though was a calico bass but is probably a type of rockfish and a nice 23" blue lingcod.
Upon arriving at the launch I was greeted by a photographer from the Monterey Herald what took some photos and asked me some questions and ended up putting a photo of me in the Monterey Herald website that I saw. A California Fish and Wildlife agent was also on hand to greet me, measure my 23" blue lingcod (22" minimum length in California) and checked my fishing license.
When I got home I filleted up the lingcod which exposed the crazy blue meat. I then dipped it in an egg wash and panic bread crumbs and pan fried on medium high for 3-5 minutes per side and watched the meat turn from blue to pink. I put the fried lingcod in a hard tortilla shell along with avocado and slaw and enjoyed eating it while watching a sunset.
On 4th of July I drove to Santa cruz and found a cool beach on the West Side where I could ride my skimboard, surfboard, and take some cool drone shots of the crew surfing.
