Great video 👍. One small thing though, there have been extensive studies in Oregon regarding the mortality rates of crabs returned to the ocean. The study found that throwing a crab (vs placing it calmly) significantly increased its odds of dying because the violent re-entry into the water damaged their gills and ultimately led to their death. Just a bit of info that you should consider for the next time you go crabbing.

Love the killer videos, thanks for putting them out there! I've had a huge Stellar Sealion attack my pots out of the mouth of Bodega Bay. They are surprisingly powerful & efficient, if you hang fish heads from the top of the pot they will literally pull up the pin and eat the heads. I found some of my pots & bait pins bent like that and their claws are super sharp so that might be one explanation to your altered pot. I lost some fish heads, rebaited then I saw the big guy (named him Stew) and he was making quick work of my work. Meanwhile the guy next to me had all his chicken stolen, so guess they've been poorly trained to eat chicken, go figure

The first fish you caught was a lingcod. It doesn't have spikes.. No worry about handling. Just watch out the gill and mouth, insane teeth that will mess up your hand and fingers.

Just subbed you. Interesting on that damaged pot. Poachers maybe if only the line was cut. But the metal was also damaged. Did you see any apparent teeth scratches? Sea lion?

Thank you for checking out my video! I do not see any teeth marks. The cage was bent in. I pulled it out before I turned camera on. It is a mystery.

Poached for sure. Watch out. I had 3 cage traps stolen right outside the jetty by Kayak crabbers this year. I dropped them with the kayakers nearby, went out past Bodega rock to fish for an hour or so, came back and the traps and the kayakers were gone. They saw me leave and knew it.

I think you may be on to something with your line hauler theory. I’ve seen first hand what happens when you don’t stop a power hauler in time. It ain’t pretty. Chances are your harness went into the boom pulley & got snagged so they cut it to get it out & back it off. Sucks that happened, but hey, they can’t keep a good man down! Still got your limit. Eventually, they’re gonna get what’s coming to them. Hopefully sooner than later!

The broken pod. Might be some boat drove over the bouye and dragged it. Was it shift from your way point? They might had taken the crab while pulling out the tangle line. Or the pot got smashed into some rocks while they were dragging it.

@ChrisPfish23 жыл бұрын
i drive to bodega bay and launch from there. The drive on water from berkeley to bodega would be close to 50miles. You do about 20mph on the ocean so it doable. Thanks for watching

@ChrisPfish24 жыл бұрын
@@reeceadams384 Yeah you should get a good idea of what to use from watching my videos. go to tomales point/bird rock area. Fish in 60-120' of water. You dont stay in same spot because of current. First drift you see what the current is doing. 2nd drift you know what current is doing so you position accordingly. You want to move about 0.5-1.5 mile mph. Faster drift you need more weight and shallower water is easier to fish. slow current take advantage and go deeper. My two biggest lings were in 50-70' so deeper isnt always better. Earlier in season like now deeper probably better.
@reeceadams3844 жыл бұрын

The water always looks so calm when you are out. I was out Saturday and the swells were huge there in bodega. Do you look for something before you go out? I’m new to ocean fishing so I don’t know how to tell if it’s going to be good or not.
@ChrisPfish24 жыл бұрын
hey, thanks for checking out my videos! Yeah you for sure want to get conditions before going out. Type in bodega bay swell report in google. Look for the site willy weather. Click on that and then bodega head because that is going to be worst case. My rule of thumb is 5ft or less. Intervals matter so that is how often. Over 10 seconds is good. Next check the weather report. Look at the hourly as well. You want it 10mph or less for the high on the day. If its 6mph in the early hours and 12mph in the afternoon it will be choppy out there. 2mph in the morning and 10mph in afternoon is what you want. Dont pay attention to tides as far as it being safe or not. Bodega was 7ft at 15 seconds with wind 5-15mph yesterday. Half Moon Bay was 6ft at 15 seconds and 1-8mph winds. I went to HMB. Got 15 crab, 2 ling, 1 cab. Thanks again, Chris P
