Here is a video of a climb I did in 2010. It was a long day out, but mostly fun.

Gotta be a badass to just like casually solo Longs in Winter.

Anybody that does this kind of thing is a badass, plain and simple. You have my deepest respect and admiration.

I climbed the Keyhole route with good weather in the middle of June. With friends. That was very hard. What this guy did was disgusting. The video does it absolutely no justice. The part where he described crouching in the fetal position in the Narrows makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about it. It's bad enough with no snow or ice. Someone died falling off there last year in perfect conditions. To be there by yourself with winds like that in Winter would one dangerous and lonely place.

Jaw dropping!!! Summited Longs Peak in the summer in lightning and piercing rain.. and I thought that was scary!

I’m trying to mentally prepare for this route in the winter, but I keep coming back to this video and am like, nope, not ready yet. I’ve done class 2s in the winter in terrible conditions, but they just don’t stack up to this

I've been to the base of the Spearhead in October. That's quite a hike. For you to go on to summit Longs, in winter, in those conditions is absolutely mind blowing. You're a ninja. A total nutjob ninja, but a ninja none the less. Well done.

Mad Colorado props on this climb. I'm too afraid to climb Fourteeners anytime outside July and August, and that hasn't changed after watching your hike. Thanks for posting

I climbed pretty much the same route in similar conditions back in 1998 - but with a group.. This really brings back great memories. Thanks for posting Mr. Warren.

Big congrats. What an epic climb. I've been up on Long's in mid October and could not believe the wind gusts. I can't even imagine doing that climb with ice and snow later in the year.

I'm planning a winter trip to RMNP and wondering if I can go climbing the longs peak. After seeing your post, I cross over the idea immediately. You're so brave to do it solo! Thanks for the post!

@thricefelt Totally depends on conditions, with the exception of the West Gully -that's a legit ice climb that requires two tools. If you don't do the West Gully (as most people don't), than you could get away with one tool if the Trough has more snow in it. With fatigue and frozen hands, I was glad to have two tools going up and down the ice section of the Trough in low snow conditions.

Out of curiosity (if you're even still watching these comments) why did you go up the west gully from black lake to go to longs? The (summer) trail up from black is on the east side, not sure what it would be like in winter but seems like that added considerable distance no?
@edwarren146 жыл бұрын
Definitely not the most direct way to go. But the chance to do a long, fun ice climb along the way was worth it.

Trying to decide which one is more badass between this and another young man’s soloing Notch Couloir (kzbin.info/www/bejne/raqyknpvh72gmdk). Will have to give edge to this one due to the weather condition, even though the terrain of the Notch route is way more exposed

Did you carry your ski boots in your bag? How much weight total?
@edwarren14 Жыл бұрын
I kept my boots on the whole time. I ski toured in for the approach, then switched to ice climbing with crampons, then back to skis for the descent
