Guys, i actually got the following which still work: z = -4 ; y = 8 ; x = 1 all are variables which fit in the equation. Strange that the teacher did't show that there areother solutions to this...?

Mr. McLogan, I passed my college placement exam because of your videos. I am a non-traditional student who lost nearly all mathematical knowledge after high school. Thank you so much for uploading all of these great videos. They have been a tremendous help. I also passed my first college-level math exam with a 90 the other day.

When you multiplied equation A and B how did you come up with -5 and 2?
@brianmclogan7 жыл бұрын
Those are the scalars that allow me when multiplied to obtain the same coefficients for y so that y can be eliminated when I combine the equations
@Brobecreative356 жыл бұрын
Betty Echavarria oh because basically when he did A he was multiplying a negative by negative giving him a positive, so to cancel out y he need B to be negative and positive 2 was a good solution for that

@tristanfoss74693 жыл бұрын
In fairness to teachers, no matter how you do or describe these types of equations, they always take forever and have a lot of variables that can accidentally be screwed up. In my class, no one liked this method because even if you can understand how to do it, it still takes forever. If you're clever, you can usually come up with usable shortcuts to math, but you always have to figure out X, Y, and Z the hard way.

solving 1+2, 1+3 would be easier because y is common for both 1st and 2nd equation. And 3z is common for 1st and 3rd equation. 2x + y + 3z = -2 x - y - z = -3. solve them by adding. You get 3x+2z=-5. Therefore, z= (-5 -3x)/2 Now, 2x + y + 3z = -2 3x - 2y +3z = -12. Solve them by subtracting. You get -x + 3y = 10. So, y=(10+x)/3 Now substitute all the values in any one of the equation: x - y - z=-3 x - (10+x)/3 - (-5-3x)/2 = -3 Therefore x=-1 y= (10+x)/3 = 3 z= (-5-3x)/2 = -1

When you break the three together into two sets of two together - 1, 2, 3 into 1 & 2 and then 2 & 3 - do you have to multiply 3 times 2 for both - or could you put 3 times for one and then something else for the other? If 3 had different coefficients?
