Tassels are the male parts of a corn ( maize) plant , right at the top. They produce pollen which drifts on the wind onto the silks that protrude from the emerging cobs. The silks allow the genetic material in the pollen to fertilise the grains that swell on the cob. I've been watching the process this year in my garden. Years ago we grew them at the farm - but under glass ( West of Scotland here !). Where I am now is much lower down and nearer the coast , so I am hoping for some tasty cobs before the weather closes in.

Thank you for the fact-check Auld, it's so nice to have an expert for our agricultural clues! That's right, the TASSEL and the silk are different parts of the corn plant. Definitely good to remember, I think we might have seen TASSEL on a puzzle last year, I'm sure it'll crop up again!
