@tobiewolfen0111 ай бұрын
It always seemed like a convenient oversight to get Alan and the kids separated from Malcolm, along with creating tension.
@sheaffer117 Жыл бұрын
Actually, there's a very clear explanation in the books. The T-Rexes cage had a massive mulch around it i.e the drop off except for a small part that let up from down below to the side of the fence to allow the t-rex to come up and feed on the goat within view of the passing cars. This way that if the t-rex ever tried to escape it could only escape for a very small part of the fence. Of course they did not count on there being a massive hurricane and most of the staff having left. And with The fence being electrical and the paddock being filled with food, water and everything else the t-rex we need. They didn't believe there'd be a reason for it to even try to escape on that small viewing heel.

Seems so pointless having the moat if they make a platform for it to walk up to the fence 🤣
@benmiller5015 Жыл бұрын
Nah, think of it like this. If there's a big moat n a concrete wall taller than rexy around 99% of her paddock then there's no reason to electrify most of the fence. So at the observation area you can place more security measures like extremely high voltage fencing. Remember it was never intended for the rexes to be at that area of the fence while the power was off
@jpfan4life812 Жыл бұрын
If the moat was meant to keep the t rex away from the visitors, then wouldn't that make the electric fence pointless?
@benmiller5015 Жыл бұрын
@@jpfan4life812 it would. But you also have to have a viewing area. So you bring the elevation up in the one area where the visitors will pass by, put an underground tunnel with an elevator to give the rex snacks, n electrify the beejesus out of the fence in that one area n boom, safety inspection passed. The rex wasn't supposed to be by that area when the power was off, for maintenance n whatnot

If you look at the scene, the section that they went over the edge at was also one past where the fence was there, just a short concrete barrier as that section of it does not have the posts for the fencing, so it was closer to the tunnel end of things there.

@bjbeamng85999 ай бұрын
I know, I was thinking the exact same thing, but at 5:30, they show that the entire fence has been destroyed (which, honestly, does not make a ton of sense). However, in the screenplay drawings, such as at 3:52, it is clear that only one section of the fence is destroyed; the section that the T-Rex broke through. The section of fence where the Explorer falls off the ledge is almost fully intact.
@chrismarm2111 ай бұрын
Actually there's a very clear explanation. It's simply a mistake. The filmmakers stated publicly, albeit quietly, many years ago that they fucked up. The Production Designer and Art Director and even Spielberg himself overlooked the logic of the scene and didn't even consider they'd need to explain the lack of continuity. In the book, the T-Rex paddock does indeed have a concrete moat behind the fence line that separates the enclosure from the fence line. And yes, in the film, Hammond does mention the existence of moats when discussing security measures. However, the Making of Jurassic Park book contains early concept art for the film which shows a couple of concept examples of the paddock with a moat but the final design that was constructed by the Art Department does not have a moat which indicates the filmmakers opted out of building it (either due to cost or a lack of necessity)...that is until they realized they had to drop the jeep into a tree. In the film, during the daytime scenes showing the T-Rex Paddock (filmed on location in Hawaii) there's clearly no moat behind the fence. You can literally see ground, tree trunks, and shrubbery in each direction of the frame and then there's the whole thing about the goat coming up out of the ground. However the nighttime scenes where the Rex breaks free (filmed on a soundstage) a moat exists and it's only revealed once the Rex begins to push the Jeep over the concrete lip and through the fence line. In the book, the T-Rex basically tosses the jeep up into a tree off to the side of the Tour Jeeps' road which is something they were never going to be able to pull off in the film at that time. So in a way, the Jeep being pushed through the fence line and falling into the tree was the alternative/solution to the book's handling of the Jeep. Oversights and mistakes, even big ones like this, happen all the time in Film and TV.

While I can respect the explanation behind the drop off, two issues I've always had with it are 1) If the rex is down below it, the people in the cars will only see the head. Of course that's why you put the goat on the level ground so the rex has to walk up the hill, but still. 2) That drop off has to be extremely severe because it's like 5 feet from the goat on level ground to a massive 50 foot cliff. In the novel, it's explained that the rex picks up the car and throws it into a nearby tree by the side of the road (not into the tyrannosaur paddock). So to explain how the car ended up in a tree in the film, they made a drop off and had it fall into the trees below because to film the mechanical rex picking up a car and throwing it probably would've been hell.

Most of the paddock was shot in the studio so that explains some of the inconsistencies in the choreography and continuity but I always thought when I was younger that the T-Rex pushed the car to the other side of the road where there was the moat drop off and I thought that until someone pointed out that the car is on the same side. I now accept that the T-Rex pushed the car further down because you can see multiple breaks in the fence on screen, not just one. Even if it's a little choppy that's a legitimate explanation especially because it was choreographed that way.

There is actually a very simple explanation for this scene - the T.rex goes through the fence between the two jeeps, then it goes to Lex's and Timmy's jeep, much further ahead, pushes it even further ahead, and then drops it off at that location. So the T.rex was actually quite far away from the precipice when it went through the fence.
