(Sqrt(5)-1)/2 is a root of x^2+x-1=0 It skips the first part of the solution, but arrives at the same equation: x^2=1-x Nice solution!👏

This is an entrance exam question... So, it's basically what you have to know, beforehand, just to start the course, not what you'll actually learn... of course it is high school level, have you believed someone should have a superior degree in math/physics just to enter at Stanford? It is a hard question to solve in a time limited, high anxiety scenario like these, and there are literally dozens of other questions

I'm confused. I just see a waste of energy here! You didn't get rid of √5. You still need a calculator or, at the very least, approximate √5 as 2.236. Isn't that right? Math should simplify life, not waste anyone's time!

@vincenzo Everybody knows what a root5 is, so leaving the answer in radical form is more tgan suffice. Even for high school kids, root4 is 2 and root9 is 3. Through arithmetic and graphical interpolation, everybody knows that root5 would be approximately 2.2 just by using mental approximation or by paper/pen if absolutely necessary.
