We have a few old hens, and will sometimes get soft / broken eggshells. We noticed that when we are able to give them more Kale leaves the soft eggshells seemed to resolve. We are able to grow kale most of the year here and it's one of their favorite treats, so we'll be planting a lot more this spring.

Just what I needed. Unusual situation in that my chicken lives indoors. Long story. She started laying shell less eggs and when I realized it could be life threatening, took her to the vet. If the shell less egg breaks inside her, she could die, even with immediate medical attention. Was told my feeding her hamburg, cucumbers, tomatoes, cheese, dinner rolls, etc. in ADDITION to her chicken feed was the problem. Put her on feed only, neither of us happy with her response. The shell less eggs increased. So I went back to treats, but only after she had eaten chicken feed. Shell less eggs stopped. At least for now. Live in CT. so winters are dark and long. I do take her for walks, weather permitting, and she has a coop, but is only allowed there unless someone is home to watch her, but it has a roof. She gets some sun but not much. This was never even thought of but makes perfect sense. Where and how much Vit. D do I get and give. She's a Plucky Clucker so that should be interesting. Love her so and I'm up for whatever she needs. She does have oyster shells and egg shells too. Thank you so much for your research and loved watching your ducks head for the pond and the rest of your family. Great Job.

Thank you for this information! I definitely will make sure my pekins and runners get more sun during the day. I do have one question and you may have covered it in one of your other videos but I've just discovered your channel! How do you allow your poultry to free room like that with the woods so close? We have so many predators in our area, that I'm afraid to let my chickens and ducks free room unless I'm home watching. 😫

Hi Holly G! Welcome. We are glad you are here. 🙂 We only let them free range when we are home. We have a big German Shepherd that lives near their coop, so she also helps keep them safe. We did have a Fox that killed 11 of our chickens and a duck last year. It was horrible. We felt so bad. We will eventually be putting them in the pasture and rotating them behind the cows, sheep, and goats, but we just haven’t had time to get the tractor built.

Ah yes! Vit D is needed for calcium absorption! My chickens can go outside, but their run is covered. Some hardly even go out,. To top it off, it's winter and we have had NO sunshine in weeks with the constant snow and rain. So that explains why even oyster shell isn't helping. I'll get Vit D and see if that helps. Thanks for being on top of this issue.

Hi Randy, vitamin D is critical for all of us. I am glad your doc had the sense to put you on vit D. For many years a lot of Western medicine doctors didn’t prescribe to the vitamin D theory, but functional medicine and integrative doctors have been talking about it for years. I am out in the sun a lot, but like you I use sunblock on a lot of my body. I take it every day as well and I definitely notice when I don’t take it. I am glad you noticed a difference and felt better. 🙂

I appreciate your efforts to solve your problem of soft shelled eggs. I have soft shells showing up, I have tried using a camera to discover which hen is laying the soft shell but that was a failure. I too, am providing extra vitamins, crushed eggs shells, and oyster shell into their diet. The internet said if more than one hen it could be stress, and I do have a very aggressive rooster that after nearly 4 months still harasses the new hens. But if just one hen it could be disease. It's scary for even if disease, and IF cured, the hen may live but never lay again. Either way, soft shell eggs are a genuine concern. THANK YOU for sharing.

One of my white Leghorns is laying soft, rubbery eggs. I was thinking it might have been due to too much protein since they're on 18% layer pellets and I also feed them back their eggs 3 days out of the week. Great video, thank you so much for posting this. By the way, today is the first time I’ve seen a soft egg in my chicken coop, so here I am searching KZbin for an answer. Yes, it’s very possible that vitamin D is the culprit, similar circumstances, with my semi free range chickens. But if I might forward one other possible suggestion… Yesterday, our rooster and two dominant hens, attacked one of the hens, lower on the pecking order and savaged her pretty well. No, blood loss, but lots of feathers pecked, and I’m sure it was a very tense day for the flock (1 Roosters, 8 hens all assorted ages and breeds). My wife and I are still pretty new to this, and it has been a steep learning curve to deal with all of the particular problems faced by chicken owners. Again, thank you so much for posting this, I’m just searching for any and all possible answers and solutions. Gotta love those ducks! 😅

Hi Sherrie! Thank you! Glad you found us. I searched all over and everything I found said it was calcium, but I knew it wasn’t because they were getting plenty of calcium. Finally tried adding vitamin D, and it did the trick. Occasionally, I will find an egg with no shell or a very soft egg and I add the Nutridrench with the vitamin D and problem solved. I add it about once a week to their water and that seems to take care of the problem. Let us know how it goes. Hope the duck gets better. I would add that if you live at or above the 35th parallel, the rays of the sun are not direct enough for your body to produce Vit. Hi! I have 2 6 month old black australorps. One started laying 2 weeks ago and has been a rockstar ever since! The other just started laying yesterday. The first egg was normal, small, but just like the other girls first eggs super hard shell and all and in the right spot in the nesting boxes! Today, I found a soft shelled egg out in their run no where near the nesting box which sort of concerned me. I then noticed her keep trying to nest where she let the soft shell egg out and actually got on video her letting out an egg with no shell at all! My other girl has been laying perfect with not one soft egg shell and an egg every day. They are the same breed, same age, and from the same place! Idk whether to be concerned or if it’s just her body getting used to laying? She is laying 2 weeks later than her sister I just hope it’s not a buildup or an egg bound situation? If she’s letting eggs go that wouldn’t mean egg bound right? She’s still eating, drinking, and everything normal. I don’t notice any penguin walking or lethargic-ness
@RenewedHomestead
@RenewedHomestead Жыл бұрын
Hi Matty, so sorry your chicken is dealing with that. I am not a vet. Just wanted to put that out there. Typically if they are egg bound they don’t lay at all. Does she have access to calcium or any other vitamins? Oftentimes that can be a lack of calcium or sometimes Vitamin D. Do you have oyster shells or black soldier fly larvae?

@@RenewedHomestead yes, both! I have been lacking a bit on the calcium but I do have grit and have just added extra. @mattyhennac hi Matty, it can be difficult for sure. Put some oyster shells out for her and see if that helps. You can also feed her egg shells. I actually speed up my video playback to 1.25 or 1.50 on most informational videos. It could be that I grew up watching TV, or my reptile brain… But that is one solution for Watching longer videos. 😊

Great video. We had several soft eggs and I figured it was the lack of sunlight. We intentionally built the chicken coop under trees for shade and because I can see them from the deck. I am working on changing their diet and may trim a few branches from the trees.

Lol ok I didn't know about either of these but ' rooster juice' searches as n acid substance taken out of a rooster comb n used as injections for arthritis..eww lol n the greenie meanies want to get rid of animals..anyway the layer boost looks like good mineral. I just got rooster booster from tractor supply to help with stress n loose shells. I will add that I make teas from my oregano n parsley n rosemary n soak their food in some once a week n if I'm being lazy I sprinkle powdered garlic on the food..they get different tastes...my chicken farmer friend says selenium is soft shells..😄rooster juice😄 I'm definitely diving down that rabbit hole lol

That is a great name for them, greenie meanies! They have all gone insane. Eww, the rooster juice sounds gross! I just started an herb course to become a certified herbalist for humans and animals. I know garlic and rosemary are really good for chickens. I am really excited to learn more. I haven’t used the parsley, I will try to add some of that as well. Thank you. 🙂

I give my chickens D3-K2 (2 capsules per bag of feed) until winter or they won't get their rest from egg laying & that stresses them out a bit. I also add 1/8 cup of moringa powder per bag of feed every other refill time. They always have eggshells & oyster shells available.

@@RenewedHomestead no worries, it is not uncommon for people to timestamp in the comments when there is information in a video. KZbin has become such a forum for research as well as all its other attributes that my post was more intended to inform other viewers more than any type of comments to you as the video producer, ha. I meant no insult and thank you for the added information. It has been so many days with this bird that it can't be an egg bound bird. I think she has a large ovarian tumor. Im afraid to get my hands dirty, and that is all I can conclude through palpation and 'other means of exploration' it is what it is, the statistics are high, but it's my first bird with this affliction.

We appreciate it, thank you. I didn’t even think of adding in a time stamp option in the comments. That is a good idea. It is tough when you have a sick chicken and don’t know what is wrong. It took me a while to figure out it was vitamin D for our duck. Everything I read kept stating a calcium issue, but that was the first thing we addressed. Prayers for you and the chicken. 🙏
