Here's how we solve a two step equation. It begins with the concept of equality: what we do to one side of the equation must be done to the other.

Algebra I on Khan Academy: Algebra is the language through which we describe patterns. Think of it as a shorthand, of sorts. As opposed to having to do something over and over again, algebra gives you a simple way to express that repetitive process. It's also seen as a "gatekeeper" subject. Once you achieve an understanding of algebra, the higher-level math subjects become accessible to you. Without it, it's impossible to move forward. It's used by people with lots of different jobs, like carpentry, engineering, and fashion design. In these tutorials, we'll cover a lot of ground. Some of the topics include linear equations, linear inequalities, linear functions, systems of equations, factoring expressions, quadratic expressions, exponents, functions, and ratios.
About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.
For free. For everyone. Forever. #YouCanLearnAnything

Please read my comment again: I've already said that. All I was saying is that dividing by a whole number is more intuitive than multiplying by a fraction, even if they are the same thing.

For those saying to "divide by 1/3", that will not work. Remember that dividing by a fraction will end up switching the operation and flipping the fraction, so if you divided by 1/3, you would end up multiplying by 3, which is not the same as what is supposed to be done here. 3x / 1/3 =3x*3 3x * 1/3 = 3x/3 multiplying by 1/3 = divide by 3 dividing by 1/3 = multiply by 3
@pran1zzle
@pran1zzle 12 жыл бұрын
I understood what you meant, but either you said it wrongly, or you do have some tiny confusions regarding this. What you said was: 'The only thing I wonder is why you keep saying "multiply by 1/3" instead of saying "divide by 1/3"?' The reason why he keeps saying "multiply by 1/3" is because it is NOT the same thing as saying "divide by 1/3". As I said, multiplying a number, say X, by 1/3, is the same thing as dividing it by 3. (1/3)X = X/3

Your patience is mind-boggling! The only thing I wonder is why you keep saying "multiply by 1/3" instead of saying "divide by 3"? Of course it's the same thing but splitting everything up equally (dividing) seems more intuitive to me than multiplying by something that's not a whole number... Either way, you're doing an amazing job at explaning it all :)
