Dr. Alex Simpson, a Research Civil Engineer at the US Army Corps of Engineers based at the Field Research Facility in Duck, NC, speaks to SoMAS at the Topics in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Seminar on Wednesday February 28, 2024 on the topic "Small River Plume Interaction with the Surf Zone via in situ and Hyperspectral Imaging".
Her research focuses on remote sensing capabilities, with expertise in drones (working with RGB, multispectral, hyperspectral, and thermal cameras) and X-Band radar. Much of her work has centered on submesoscale frontal features, in particular density fronts and internal waves, which are highly visible in remote sensing techniques. With the US Army Corps, Dr. Simpson will be leading efforts in X-Band radar remote sensing of the nearshore region (wave reconstruction, surface currents, river plumes) at the Field Research Facility, as well as continued research of small coastal inlets near Scripps in San Diego.
