Matt thanks so very much for posting this. Had been searching for it for years. Dawn Upshaw singing “The Last Time I Saw Paris” is one of those musical moments that have just stayed with my since I saw the broadcast on television. Literally perfection. But so much of this evening was extraordinary. Of course listening to, and seeing how moved Steve Sondheim was while speaking of Oscar Hammerstein, is a gift. What a teacher Sondheim was to composers and lyricists alike, and to his audiences. May new generations continue to discover, and learn from him.

Upshaw's interpretation of "The Last Time I Saw Paris" is exquisite and leaves me misty-eyed.

I'm so happy I found this. I had taped this from PBS years ago and used to watch it regularly. It is really one of the best specials with so much talent!

So glad you posted this!!! This was the first time I heard Audra McDonald and fell in love with Broadway! It brings back great memories of singing and watching musicals with my grandma, even though she has passed on I sing in musicals in honor of her.

Outstanding show with lots of well-deserved applause and not one person clapped with their hands over their head.

Fabulous … How young the late, great Rebecca Luger, and Audra McDonald were. So many greats who unfortunately have been forgotten.

Thank you so much for this! I can't express how much joy this has brought me! I used to have a VHS tape I recorded from my local PBS station and used to watch it over and over. Lost it sometime in the last decade or so and have been searching everywhere for it. There are so many spectacular moments in this, and my heart is full. 🙏 so much!

Not my favourite performer. There were better singers In the show

She didn’t belong on the show. She disregards the intent of the song to show off her vocal ability. That’s the difference between a Broadway singer and other singers.

Patti LaBelle sang "Carefully Taught" and it seemed like she wasn't paying a bit of attention to the words.
