For whatever reason (mental illness, drug addiction, maybe just plain anti social mind set) they like being on the street. And these people are obviously very brasen about illegally using water and electricity and causing tons of damage. I don't live in California, but this is bound to be a huge problem for the people who are working hard and paying the taxes that are being used to fix what is being destroyed and offer any help these people are getting. I hope something can be done to help everyone involved.

Yeah it's actually extremely easy to be homeless. There are a ton of programs and shelters to help out along with clinics. Most of them in California get three meals a day delivered to them by workers and an extra few hundred a week from the state that they use to buy drugs. The problem was never covid it's cities permitting this gross behavior and allowing rampant drug use.

Or at very least you've been lucky to be born in the right place from the right people where you don't even have to see certain things. I was homeless for 1 year and a half when I was 22. I had a small disability pension tho. Which means I had the money to afford a gym where I shaved/showered, I had the money to rent some of those secured boxes near the station where I could leave all my things, I had the money to eat without begging, I had the money to go into places where I could charge all my electronics. I had the money for laundry. I had video games, phones, laptop, a tablet, a damn internet plan for my smartphone LOL. I had everything. Only thing missing was a home. I was living EXTRA DELUXE LARGE by homeless standards. So yes, there are homeless that live ''large'' compared to a loooot of others. Electricity, Shower, Tiky Bar, ACs, and me are examples of that. That place would look like a resort for people what were in a worse state than my situation.

Many times with all three of those organs it one prescription for say depressions or arthritis which I monitored lead to the chronic need for heart medication, various types, asthma &/or bronchitis, diabetics with all the complications. Never said homeless people are drug addicts I said doctor drug dealers. Look at serval cases in chandler Arizona, nice beautiful city bust for 350,000 mile dollars all “health care professionals” & doctors. Take care. Never said that about anyone struggling with housing. Agreed 1000%. I'm currently a working homeless in my van. Sad truth of it all, at $10.50 an hour around 40-50 hours a week it STILL does not allow me the luxury of affording a place to live. I've had numerous debates about doing this or doi g that, sad reality is I hold a ft job and still cannot afford it. I make to much to get any help, yet I don't make enough to afford rent. People always want to claim or say ft job should afford a place to live, but the reality of it is it does not. Unless you've done your research or been in the situation you really do not understand. I would spend almost 1/3 of my income on just rent, that's not including bills.

I'm a wheelchair user and I find it very interesting that I never hear people discuss street accessibility until it's time to complain about homeless people. Homeless people who could themselves be wheelchair users, or physically disabled. And yes, I would certainly like to use the street, but given that I'm already forced off the sidewalk and in front of cars constantly because of people's garbage cans, store signs, rental scooters, lack of funding or attention for curb cuts, city construction projects--I would at least prefer to be forced off the sidewalk because someone might DIE OF EXPOSURE or wants a shred of privacy under terrible circumstances. Also, "wheelchair bound" is generally considered to be offensive, so. pretty funny to open with that.

The fact that the homeless rate has exploded in America is completely unacceptable... I literally had an employee that was living out of his van, with his girlfriend and his 65yr old Mother. He would take all the leftovers from our potlucks or food that no one wanted and feed his family. He charged all their phones at work and bathed in our bathrooms to stay clean. He did this for months and no one ever knew. But winter hit and they all came down with severe chest colds and we found them out in the van barely alive!... I was in tears and so was the paramedics and the fire fighters that showed up on the scene. I am constantly checking up on employees and making sure they have everything that they need. I will go to my grave with the horrific visual when I opened that van door and saw them all huddled together and freezing, it brings tears to my eyes to even talk about it!...

Honestly most of these people that are homeless choose it to be like that because they either dont want to work, dont like rules in shelters or family members homes, and are just lazy to put any effort into making their lives worth living again. In a huge city with shelters and soup kitchens no one should go hungry or sleep on the streets. All they need to do is put in the effort to find a job and stay at a shelter to get to that job. There are many resources to help people in their situations.

Homelessness was a deliberate and intentional act by state and local government and banks. In the 50s and 60s, city governments made it impossible to build new trailer parks. Most of the trailer parks that you see are well over 50 years old. Banks will not finance the construction of trailer parks or mobile home developments. In the 60s, California closed most of public mental health institutions. In the 70s, Section 8, rental assistance, came about. Section 8 may have helped a lot of people but its overall effect was to push rents higher on the rest of us.

Homeless "living' large?" McMansion tents? These people are homeless. Show some compassion. We are in the middle of a global pandemic. These are human beings just trying to have a shelter and a safe space to socially distance themselves. I appreciate that people still have enough whimsy in their lives to add a tiki bar but saying a shower is living large is so offensive. Yes- this is a problem but where do you expect the homeless residents to go? Will NBC4 be taking them in?

I agree Petunia. Showers, electricity and tents big enough for standing room are not examples of "living large". These are bare essentials and good for them for being so innovative by tapping into the city's water and electricity. They have a right to take a little back from a society that has long abandoned its people. What a tragedy and so disgusting to be jealous of homeless people for trying whatever they can. Wishing them the best.

My mother moved us from a nice neighborhood to a poor and dangerous one, while some other people are starting living in tents in the good one. I say SCREW IT! I'm going to buy a tent and move back.
