The War of the Roses was a series of dynastic civil wars in England from 1455 to 1485. The conflict pitted the House of Lancaster against the House of York for control of the English throne. The war was fought in three stages, and each stage was won by a different faction. The first stage of the war, known as the Wars of the Lancaster and York, began in 1455 when Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York, claimed the throne from King Henry VI of Lancaster. Richard was defeated and killed at the Battle of Wakefield in 1460, but his son Edward IV eventually succeeded in claiming the throne. Henry VI was captured and imprisoned in the Tower of London. In 1469, Henry VI escaped from prison and was restored to the throne, but Edward IV defeated him again at the Battle of Tewkesbury in 1471. Edward IV then reigned until his death in 1483. After Edward IV's death, his son Edward V became king, but he was quickly deposed by his uncle Richard III. Richard III is accused of having Edward V and his brother Richard, Duke of York, murdered, but there is no definitive proof of this. Richard III's reign was short-lived. He was defeated and killed by Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond, at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485. Henry Tudor then became king as Henry VII, and the War of the Roses came to an end. The War of the Roses was a complex and bloody conflict, and it had a profound impact on English society. The war caused widespread death and destruction, and it led to the rise of a new dynasty, the House of Tudor.
