Definitely do a video on the repair of the faulty power supply, it will be interesting to see what the fault could be since it seemed to be supplying voltage.
@LearnElectronicsRepair21 күн бұрын
I most certainly will

I think I know why it won't start. The standby voltage is only 4V. Most likely the supervisor IC is not even turned on. Without it sensing the PS_ON signal from the motherboard when you press the power button, the PWM IC will never wake up to start switching, therefore the power supply remain "dead". Other scenario would be the supervisor protection kicks in because it sensed the low standby voltage. It is after all, a 1V difference.

All the best to you man

Hi Richard, these things happen. As I always say, you are only human after all. Good of you to show it. You recently said yourself that problems are often created by the user even if there are no problems. This is a good example. Nice video.

Nice one, i chuckled all the way. Especially when you dug your own hole deeper with stating "Go figure that guys" or "Richard's magic fingers". Now that i wouldn't run into as i wouldn't be narrating a recording to begin with ;) When i went back, i had another good chuckle when you wiggled the sata power connector and stated "i can see that this doesn't look like it's quite plugged in properly". Comedy gold :) It's when you started wiggling those sata cables that i suspected the issue, and the following overhead shot clearly confirmed it, and i likely also would have missed it if i had my nose on it. I do wonder whether i would have spotted the issue so early if you had not forewarned us... Next time you have one of these, don't do the intro and only reveal that you fooled yourself at the end and that it was obvious in the edit, that would be quite the test for your viewers :) Personally, I much prefer fooling myself with the switch on the back of the ATX psu. Another graphics card gets plugged in and the machine is suddenly dead as a doornail. I then test the previous one which now also fails, and then the same goes for onboard graphics... Then the ssd and ram comes out for the next round, before the power supply is deemed suspect, and then... Not again... Humans... Terrible creatures...

Merry Xmas, Richard. One thing is reality and another thing is the show played by a lot of youtubers. I think that it is very important to show mistakes, misjudgements and such...the true and only path to learn. Regards from Italy.

We have all made silly mistakes. I remember earlier this year; I was repairing a Power Supply and as it was dead as a dodo, I assumed that there would be nothing in the capacitors........ I was very VERY wrong and had two very nasty shocks that really hurt a lot!!! That is one mistake I hope I will never repeat again. Take care and stay safe everyone, Joe

We call it brain-fart moment. It happens. Things like power button connected to reset and vice versa. Connecting another bad PSU that you forgot to place on the "correct" pile. This is why we need these holidays. To rest and load some energy to do stuff.

Nothing electric will work unless it is plugged into a working power source. I saw that the hard drive and disk dive were still plugged into to dead power supply when you were testing with your good supply. Great video.

Sometimes its so obvious we can't see it. We have all spent 20 minutes looking for something which is in your back pocket, which is more annoying when it would have been easier if your glasses (which we always missplace) wern't hiding on top of your head at the same time !
