Hey Rajeev, you are not obligated to give a minimum of 18% tip whenever you dine in at a restaurant, if the service is bad at a restaurant, you can give less tip or no tip. What has changed in the last few years is when you do a takeout on the phone, online or in-person the restaurant asks you for a tip but you are not required to tip if you are going inside the restaurant to pick up your takeout, but if you wait in your car in the restaurant parking lot and they bring your takeout to your car it is polite to give a tip but not 18%, 2-3 US dollars is fine. Why in America you don't add the sales tax in the actual cost of the product you are buying is because the sales tax of that product you buy can vary by state, county and city. The final cost (sales tax included) of paper towels at Walmart in LA will be different if you buy paper towels at another Walmart in Anaheim, Orange County, California. This will add more confusion to the customer and builds distrust with Walmart on pricing. That's why you leave the paper towels cost as is without the sales tax because that cost should be the same at the Walmart in LA or in Anaheim or San Diego, San Francisco or etc. Just imagine if you do the same in Trinidad for the cost of paper towels from a Massy Store in Port-of-Spain compared with a Massy store in San Fernando, if Port-of-Spain has a different VAT rate than San Fernando when displaying the actual final cost with VAT. There is no sales tax on food for human consumption but there is a sales tax if the food is prepared that means you will not pay sales tax when you buy bread or a dozen of eggs in the supermarket but if you buy an egg McMuffin sandwich prepared at McDonalds you have to pay a sales tax. Buy food from supermarkets no sales tax buy food from restaurants there is sales tax.

That makes sense, so the cost of the item remains the same throughout the states, it’s just cuz the tax varies by state, thanks for this insight 😁

Hi Rajeev and Julia, welcome back to the U.S.... I hope you enjoy your stay in LA! FYI, when dining at restaurants, make sure to go through your check with a fine tooth comb because some restaurants automatically include the gratuity. You don't want to double tip some of these overpriced restaurants!

Great vlog,Vibes, can imagine the time it took you guys to get to LA. I got caught up the first time I visited the US with sales tax😢. I was told many people buy their cars in Delaware due to low sales tax. America is never straightforward so they always have to get you to pay more. In the UK most food places charge a service charge instead of tipping. This can be between 10 to 12 percent. Regardless of the service you get 😮. If you think eating out is expensive in the USA, its worse in Europe 😂😂😂. We taught eating out in the UK was expensive until we visited Europe. What's worse the food on offer is not too appetising for a Trinbago palate😅😅. Blessed up.

Welcome to Lalaland, Rajeev and Julia. Some grocery items are non-taxable. Paper goods and candies are taxable, as an example. When you buy fast food, they have tip jars, which wasn't the case a decade ago. Don't bother riding the train "subway" system. 😅😅😅

Insightful tips bro What’s the price of gas there? You had to pay tolls?
@TrinbagoVibes
@TrinbagoVibes Жыл бұрын
To fill a tank it cost around 40-50 US so approximately $300 TT, which ain’t too bad and yeah there are toll roads but I always take the sun/toll pass so I don’t have to worry about tolls plus it saves on time

Bro you going about that comparison wrong, lets say the minimum wage in florida is $10, and i know its not $10 but just using very worst case scenario, $14.50 is an hour and a half work in florida, whereas in trinidad the minimum wage is $17.50 so you have to work a little less than 6 hours, i guarantee you if you work for 6 hours in florida at $10 you definitely would be able to survive with that properly. A whole chicken is like $7, a rotiserrie chicken in sams club is $5. Hope you understand what i am explaining.
@TrinbagoVibes
@TrinbagoVibes Жыл бұрын
I understand dollar for dollar, but let’s say you get two chickens at that price plus tax, then I guess you can survive by just eating protein for the entire week, was never comparing minimum wage, nor hours worked

Rajeev - the tipping culture is out of control in America. I believe restaurant owners should paid their employees more than have them rely on tips. In most restaurants good or Bad service tipping is Mandatory. I feel I am being forced to tip. Is it breaching my constitutional rights?. It is indeed a controversial topic. Anyway Americans - we are generous tippers. Lol

lol, yup and I agree that’s it’s so bad that those working in the industry are quicker to jump on our cases rather than tackle their employer’s policy
