I still have my CDP-101 sitting in my livingroom. I bought it back in may 1984. I haven‘t used it for a long time, since I mostly hear SACD and Blu-Ray Audio these dass.

The good news is I picked it and the graphic equalizer up as well. Equalizer is all cleaned up and working great, tapedeck is going to be a winter project. Unfortunately it's from a smoker's home, so lots of cleaning is required.

Thing about CDs is they sometimes contained hidden tracks too, or even PC-Interactive stuff for exclusive content that at the time we couldn't just look up on youtube, those were the days... :P

The price pecking order in my local thrift store: LPs > Cassettes > BDs > CDs > DVDs where LPs are the most expensive and DVDs are often free. It's a good time to pick up CDs for next to nothing these days, and I for one have indulged myself sometimes since I only have a CD player in my car. No cassette mechanism, sadly.

I once found a CDP-101 in the trash. It worked. The problematic laser focus servo control IC had already been replaced, but the one for the sled and door was still original and started acting up, so I replaced that one as well. Works great! I also have the Philips version of that portable CD player which unfortunately does not work. It appears the spindle motor is slightly seized. And it appears that the controller also burned out trying to spin it. Or something. IDK.

The black Playstation PS1 discs also often have audio tracks for the game music, in addition to the data track 1. Have to be careful with data CDs in older CD players though, as the unmuted digital noise can damage tweeters if too loud.

Great device! I use my 1995 CDP-X5000 and just love the controll of a Sony in general. Oh, and Re-Volt was one of those games that had it's data on track 1 and the rest where audio tracks (PCM). So no need for your PC to playback music files (what was quite soms processing in that day) and just do a CD-audio play at the proper track.

I have a 1984 CD player the NEC CD-607. I like it because it has a headphone jack with volume control so I can use it standalone as I don't have an amp. It is 40 years old, that's old even for a human.

Some CDs are actually starting to get expensive now, mostly 1980s CDs and especially pre-1990 reissues that aren't remastered. Also anything that has a fanbase and isn't available on a streaming or download service will usually not be cheap either (like a lot of obscure indie stuff, and TV and Video Game soundtrack albums).

Nice improvised repair, it does what it should do... Over here it's the same, I used to collect records when they were cheap, but I have since moved to collecting CDs as now those are the cheaper option. And it's much easier and faster to transfer them to computer files for network playback.

It would be interesting to see if those old CD players can handle newer and more obscure authoring techniques and media, such as: * Multisession discs * CD-RWs * Tracks flagged as quadraphonic or with pre-emphasis. Individual tracks have different flags that can be set. One determines if the track is quadraphonic, but as far as I know, no CD players ever supported this. Another determines if de-emphasis (frequency equalization) should be applied on playback. * Audio in the pre-gap area before track 1: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pregap Interestingly, your CDP-200 has an "index" display and allows you to select the index timepoints for each track (see the Wikipedia article for details), so playing track 1's pre-gap audio should be easy! Regarding multisession discs: a CD can have different sessions, each with its own independent tracks. Computers will usually only read the _last_ session, while audio CD players will read the _first_ session. By burning a disc with audio tracks in the first session and a data track in the second session and then finalizing the disc, you can create a hybrid audio/data CD with no danger of accidentally playing the data track on an audio CD player. 10:44 - Starting in the late '90s, CDs of popular music began to be mastered with their waveforms clipping against the maximum possible amplitude, reducing their dynamic range. Metallica's _Death Magnetic_ was an infamously extreme case of this. For this reason, I often prefer to look for the _oldest_ possible editions of albums on CD: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness_war

I doubt it would read CD-RWs or multi-session CD-Rs. The rest I would need to find CDs that feature those.

Those old CD players should handle pre-emphasis fine because it was always part of the Philips redbook standard. It also was actually used a lot when these old players were made, pre-emphasis is rare on CDs mastered after around 1991. If anything it would be interesting to see if some of the new ultra cheap CD players implement the redbook standard correctly and can handle pre-emphasis (and other things like index marks) properly. Pre-emphasis is something to keep in mind if you are ripping older CDs, software like iTunes will actually reverse it silently (and thus will not yield a bit perfect rip), but software like EAC and Cuetools won't because they assume you want a bit perfect copy of the actual data pressed on the disc, and the user can do any postprocessing afterwards.

Sometimes Janky is the only way to repair old gear. As mentioned in the other comments - stuff like this is definitely why I have wanted to get in to 3D printing. But at the same time, its a lot of work for a "1 off" item. I run a full-time repair shop and plenty of times I have had to result to "janky" repairs (Janky but reliable is the key I think) - just so the customer can still enjoy their 30,40, 50yr old item.... As long as it works and is somewhat reliable / factory looking, its a creative solution to an otherwise unfixable problem...

Have you used a 3D printer? 3D printing had been used to reproduce parts on these vintage Betamax, cd, and tape deck machines. So, it would be great to invest in a 3D printer.

@@probnotstech The CTF 9090 appears to be the same or similar to the CTF 9191 which a friend of mine had. These were solidly built machines that were made to last. Pioneer went downhill when they introduced the series that included the CT9R. All the models were a single digit number (receivers SX-8, SX-7 etc). I was a Pioneer dealer and we called these the "plastic Pioneers". The CT9R and that series were a nightmare to service. All or most of the decks before that were great.
