Back in the early 80's, I found myself in Athol, Mass with a day to kill, so I walked in the front door at Starrett and asked the lady at the desk if I could have a factory tour. She seemed a little surprised but asked me to wait and soon a guy showed up and introduced himself. I don't think his name was Starrett, but as I recall he was related to the Starrett family. At any rate, he was kind enough to take the time to give me an interesting tour of part of their facility. It ended in a wonderfully cluttered room which he said contained a specimen of just about every tool they had made. I understand that has been organized into a neat museum now. Before I left he asked me if I owned any Starrett tools. I replied, yes I did and liked them very much. Then he asked how many of them I had purchased new. I thought a minute and allowed that none were bought new. He then said something I have never forgotten. "Our biggest competitor isn't the import stuff. It's the stuff we made 50 years ago...it is usually well cared for and never wears out." Since the advent of eBay, I have purchased plenty more and I am sorry to say I have yet to buy anything new. I love their tools and hope they continue to prosper but I am afraid I haven't helped them any in the way of sales.

The one new item I bought from Starrett is their stock (SCX). The P/E is a little over 10, Price/Book is 0.59. It's too bad they stopped paying dividends after the ill-conceived steel tariff came in.

Hi Sam. That is a very good story. I will repeat that with your promotion in a video. I must confess to having bought very few new items myself. I did buy quite a few for the school when I was a teacher. That's actually a rather sobering story

I try to buy new when I can, just because it would be a tragedy if Starrett either went belly up or stopped making the basic tools used by hobbyists and concentrated entirely on CMM and other high-end gear. They discontinued the Fay pattern calipers and dividers, which was very sad. That said, I do have lots of used Starrett equipment from eBay. You can get the vernier master calipers and height gages for a pittance.

Seeing you and other machinists with Starrett led me to investigate my small collection of calipers. Several came from my father in law that spent 43 years as an electrician in a John Morrell packing plant. Our of the 5 that I have three are Starrett. All are well used and very corroded. They carry initials that were not my father in law and I suspect they were cast offs from old machinists. So they are now elevated in my mind as keepers. Great video.

Love this. I have purchased many retired machinist’s tool boxes with their collections of tools. Love looking them up in the old catalogs and learning how they are used. I have a couple of vintage Gerstner boxes where I keep the cream of the crop. I may not use all of them, but it’s fun to play with them.

Starrett and mr.pete are a true pair like one person. Printing is so must more affordable then even in 1999 know this from doing printing work of a company catalog. Your wife know you have those girly pictures in the shop? LOL. Starrett's hardening black finish is unique to their processes so of course we love it. Like the bearing slot measuring scale. Scribe's, drivers and pin vises for the jeweler watchmaker, we are listening here right now, hey are real nice.

As a quality inspector, I did a tour of the plant in Athol, (3 days). One of the things that I remember most is that the factory was built over the river, and the factory still used water power to run a lot of their equipment, ( huge belts running across the ceiling). Another thing was a 2 story section with a large 20 foot cylinder, they checked bore gauges for missile tubes on submarines.

I have used the 299 and the 289 many times. The 299 often with a 3" diemakers square rule to fit in a small recess (think boring a hole through a plate in a double wall tank on a ship and needing to measure to a framing member during a repair) and the 289 for reach-over measurements where the spacing needs to be right on to a raised center reference from the wrong side, like fitting or blanking some flanged valve setups. Many other ways, but thesemake it easy in the field.... Taper gauges are also real handy in the field. Well worth the $$$$$... Never had the need for a clearance gauge, though. Thanks for showing the collection.

Your 11'' ruler story reminds me of the dummies we had in carpentry class in the mid 90's while learning to read tape measures. So many did not get it. The test question, "how may sixteenths are in 1 inch?". 75% of the guys in that class with me got it wrong, with guesses like, "one, five, and eleven" Only a few understood why the teacher, Mr.Wright, would point and laugh at the students for those answers. Mr.Wright was an awesome carpentry teacher. He did not tolerate playing around, but he did make it fun and interesting for the guys willing to learn. They dont even have shop classes of any kind in that school now. What a shame.

I was reading GH Thomas' book last night and he mentioned that the scriber from a combination square was often used in the mill as a makeshift wobbler. They called it a 'Sticky Pin' and it was used by pressing the ball into a blob of putty on the mill chuck. It was then trued up as normal and used to align the spindle. Such a clever trick and probably the origin of the tool used so often which you also built in one of your other videos.

Some years back I was threading barrel tenons for large ring 98 Mauser rifles.. Even though Mauser is a German rifle, they use 55 degree thread form on the tenon and inside of the receiver.. Every fish tale I had was for 60 degrees so I finally bought a Moore and Wright gauge which has both thread forms so that I could grind the proper angle on threading tools...

If you stay with a good ruler like Starrett, there is very little error in length. Take a pair of 18" calipers and measure the length of a 12" Starrett ruler. I have no problem putting them end to end other than a way to hold them or line them up. For layout over 12" I've used my 6" calipers and laid a 12" ruler on the end and marked the end of the ruler many times. I don't think I have ever seen that clamp you showed or even would have realized what it was for. Interesting.

Is it possible to date Starrett tools by the style/color pattern of box and/or label?

I've got a small amount of starrett tools from (what I assume to be from the number of specialty tools) a clockmaker's toolbox which I got at the garage sale of an ex-antique store owner. Not all of it was in good shape - I have a "double depth of sharp threads" fishtail gauge which is in terrible condition, and after derusting it looks like it was made in the 1390s and not the 1930s. I also have the keyway clamps and the rule clamp. Given the small size of work the original owner must have done, he didn't have any rulers over 6" in the box besides some non-locking folding rules. So, I assume he must have used the clamp to make a "regular size" ruler when needed. A few weeks ago I also got a starrett No. 1 Wire Cutter in a toolbox of assorted things off craigslist. The woman who sold the box to me said the original owner would have been 120 years old if he were alive today. It's rare I find that stuff near me but when I do, the prices are usually so good I don't bother haggling.

No 82 looks like you would lay the straight side of the caliper in the depth of the key way you just cut, then you screw the bent end of the caliper with the adjusting screw against the apposite side of the shift. Then you read you measure between the gap of the flat of the point side to the curved end of the caliper to see weather the depth is to small or large. You have to remember there was a day that keyways were cut with a special cold chisel and I've seen done it in books. Could be wrong though and I hope there was no confusion here, for it's just a theory.

👍🏼👍🏼 for recognizing the fact that your father held a union card I think the kids now days are going to miss out on the importance of unionizing when its too late and have to start all over again When I am asked what a union does for workers I try to explain that it gives you a working contract that spells out your wages raises vacations and working conditions and hopefully most important your pension rights that the for fathers of your trade who were thinking of you tried to set up for you Our children will be working longer and longer into their old age before being able to retire 37 years in heavy duty truck trade and lucky to be able to be retired last 8 years with pension God bless those that gave theirs lives in a effort to organize workers rights

I also had to buy a Chinese set of small hole gages for a project because I can’t afford the starrett. I only have a couple starrett tools, and they’re beautiful. I’d really like just a simple starrett 230 mic, but again, they’re expensive. And shipping up here to Canada is atrocious. Can eBay a #230 for $50, but $50 shipping because of the Global shipping program....

When i was in school, I always wondered why the school district couldn't provide sharp hack saw blades or files.
