Just finished The Cuphead Show and I was really thrilled when I saw these cartoon references. I still haven't seen anyone talk about them yet so I made this compilation of some of the ones I spotted.
I know this is a pretty random video but I love Cuphead so much so just bear with me.

These references are wonderful because they’re not clear copies of the older animation. They are clear inspirations with their own movements and direction.

The pink elephants from Dumbo just unlocked a hidden memory. I remember how uncanny that segment was in the film when I was a kid, and coming back to it as an adult hits so different. It all makes sense. One of the animators did psychedelics and drew what he saw.

WHA? How can ANYONE be a PINK ELEPHANTS Enthusiast? They Scared Me Half to Death when I was Little. I Had a Small Night-Light Plugged into the Wall just down next to My Bed and it wasn't very Bright. I SWEAR I Saw what Looked like a Pink Elephant Peeking-Out from Behind My Dresser Mirror. It Creeped Me out so Much I put a Lamp on My Dresser which Lights Up My Bedroom enough that it's Bright but not too Bright. More of a Light Golden Fluorescent Glow Brighter than a Kerosene Lamp. I Still Sleep with My Dresser Lamp on just as a Force of Habit. Trust Me. when You're around 3 to 5 Years Old those Things can Scare You so much They'll Scare You until You're around 9 - 11 and Finally get over the Fear and can Finally Rest... (Also other than the Pink Elephants from Dumbo I Scared to Death of the Heffalumps and Woozles from Winnie the Pooh. Which is Ironic because My Little Wall Night-Light had Lumpy from Pooh's Heffalump Movie and also I had Never seen Lumpy in that Movie cause I Only Saw Him in Pooh's Heffalump Halloween Movie...)

Yeah they didn't want to go full Fleischer sadly. It's best to consider the show a completely separate thing from the game - I mean, even stuff like plot setup is different. I've learned it's best not to be annoyed because kids like it so its inspiring new artists.
@darrelsam419
@darrelsam419 2 жыл бұрын
The game had a combination of both Fleisher and Disney styles. Cuphead and Mugman are heavily based on Mickey and Oswald, while many of the enemies are based on Fleischer cartoons. So I guess that's why the cartoon has references from both styles too.

The moment Cuphead and Mugman were in the haunted house, I immediately recognized the Bimbo reference. It’s so satisfying to see them doing their homework and it pays off so well. I wanted the skeletons to do spooky scary skeletons so bad. These types of cartoons are so special because of how creative and expressive they are. I love how it’s making a comeback with the Animaniacs new stuff, Looney Tunes, Cuphead, and how Steven Universe had the amazing Spinel. This animation style is just so dope and trippy (seriously watch some of it when drunk/high it’s awesome) and is sooo much better than CG. Sure, what Disney makes now is great with how realistic it is but at the same time, I don’t want realistic. I love the slapstick and craziness of cartoons. I’m 21 but I don’t care how old you have to be to enjoy cartoons

Although, and I might be reaching here, I really like to think the part moments before that where Cuphead and Mugman we're opening the doors the ghost were pulling up was a reference to The Beatles Yellow Submarine. Because the first one they opened showed a train coming at them before Cuphead slammed the door, and there was a part just like that in Yellow Submarine. Damn! I was right about that Ichabod Crane reference :O I also want to add another one, during the Devil song in the first episode, there's a How The Grinch Stole Christmas (Chuck Jones) reference when the Devil slithers in pretty much the exact same way the Grinch did during his song.

I remember when I was watching the episode, Ghosts Ain’t Real, I randomly joked of a Spooky Scary Skeletons reference and when I saw Cuphead and Mugman watching the skeletons in fear, I couldn’t believe my eyes. But it was also pretty expected and cool to see

Gosh damn this show is amazing it feels like animation at its roots I love the new stuff too. It’s just great to have variety in your life. And it just proves your show doesn’t have to be linear or whatever you call it for it to be good. That’s part of what made the 2000’s cartoons so fricken good. I love a linear structured show too, heck Gravity Falls is my favorite show of all time. But I love animation in general. And Brad Bird once said that Animation isn’t a genre. It’s an art form, to perform genres in.(Something like that on the Incredibles commentary)

At the beginning of the video, the saxophones and violins are a reference to an old cartoon, in which a young saxophone boy falls in love with a violin girl, but their respective countries do not get along. It's a bit like Romeo and Juliet in fact. Besides, we can see a saxophone character with a hat like in the old cartoon in several episodes. In the episode of the king dice show, there is a rabbit with blue shorts which could be a reference to Oswald. I really think there are many other very subtle references in this great cartoon that is the cuphead show! Can't wait to see season 2!

Cuphead really IS bringing a new era of 1920 and 30s cartoons to the new age
@godzillavkk
@godzillavkk 2 жыл бұрын
Let's just hope that's the ONLY part of the 1920's and 30's it brings back. From 1920 until 1933 alcohol was prohibited in the USA, so having an alcoholic drink was impossible without getting arrested or dying because of bad homemade brew. Crime was able to organize itself in a way that will probably never get untangled again. Many people got murdered in gangster violence. Jazz music was initially seen as "barbaric" just because it was made by blacks, and it had to be adapted to symphonic music to make it well-known. Hollywood in its early years was subject to more scandals than ever since, leading to a industry-wide censorship that lasted until the 1960s. The Great Depression between 1929 and 1940 caused major unemployment and poverty in many civilized countries, also forcing quite some people to start a life in crime. The "Dust Bowl" generated a desertification of the Midwest. Germany was particularly struck hard, because the country was still paying huge war debts to other countries, causing mass poverty and the ideal atmosphere for Nazism to gain voters. Many countries during this time period suffered under either Nazism, Fascism or Communism. From 1933 on Jewish, homosexual, Romani and left wing people were already persecuted in Nazi Germany, at the same time disagreeing in anything with Stalin meant a one-way ticket to Siberia. War was already brewing in Europe and the Far East, when Japan invaded China and South East Asia. Many countries were still colonies, which wasn't a great deal for the natives there. Afro-Americans were still second class citizens and the Ku Klux Klan was still quite powerful in many political circles.
