I’ve owned all three brands over 50 years. And still have several. For me, Marantz is the standard by which most other receivers are rated. Their smooth clean sound, punchy power, ability to drive most any speaker, and build quality. Not to mention ascetics, with that gyro tuning dial, beautiful blue face, and indicator lamps. My 2245 is the most coveted piece in my collection, and I will die with it no doubt. Not knocking other brands, particularly Pioneer and Sansui, because they too are the premiere receivers of the day, along with Harmon Kardon. But there’s just something about Marantz.

MARANTz no question ask sounds amazing but the only thing I don’t like marantz is way too heavy to carry like my Luxman 71/3R too damn heavy so I have to let them go

I heard some of the Pioneer SX-xxx models had power supply problems. Not the 4 digit models. Actually, the SX 1980 is one of the most powerful receivers ever made...as well as 80 lbs :)

For many years many of the Pioneers were almost unfixable because of the Darlington power packs they used. They became like hens teeth, and if you were lucky enough to find them, you’d pay through the nose. Fortunately now there’s a company that makes a single unit to replace them. And they work very well.

I don't see 1970s Pioneer, Sansui, Marantz, Kenwood, Nikko, Technics, and Sherwood as being particularly different from each other in their regular lines. Sonically I put them all in a group a fraction of a degree below Harman/Kardon (I'm a fan), Yamaha, HH Scott, and Onkyo of the same era. Sanyo, Hitachi, Luxman, and a few others did pretty well, too; though I don't know those well enough to be sure where they fit in the same scheme. It's sort of unfortunate that H/K didn't get into the "monster receiver" game. It could have beaten many if not all of the others. At the same time it is good that H/K passively proved you don't need a billion watts to get good sound.

Actually their all good brands but is just depends about the power some stereos not enough power some other huge powers and many years ago back in the seventies they build small receivers and keep upgrading so the companies can make money until today just like iPhones now it’s iPhone 16 the company keep making those things with a lot of ingredients to make make money same with stereos keep making massive receivers to make a lot of money.

Marantz, Pioneer, Sansui, Yamaha etc... they are all most all the same it dipends on the models.... You have to take into account that Maranz e Pioneer spent a lot of money on advertising and marketing during the 70's to make a name for themselves, in other words you just pay the name of the brand 😂😂... Even a good Nikko, which is a somewhat "underrated" brand, can keep the pace with a Marantz o Pioneer................ even if there were differences in sound these are minimal and indistinguishable.... and that doesn't mean one sounds better than the other... it's all a matter of taste. Trust me. 😀😀

As a 70s audio salesman I agree- but as a salesman we had to sell what we had and we had to talk up certain lines

What’s the model number on your pioneer, I have a sx-939, bought it in 1974. This model would really push some floor standing speakers. I was told when the sound cuts off like that, that it was a circuit protector to stop your speakers from over loading. My receiver would do that when I was pushing the speakers hard.

Just keep it then. I gave away a Marantz 2238b and a Sansui G4500 twenty five years ago and still regret it. The sad part is I do not even think the gifts were appreciated. Most likely ended up in an attic, shed or garbage. If it means that much to you don't sell it.
