The 2 launch areas allow more youth at the game table, and for ALL team members a chance to be on the robot game during a competition. It also changed how teams play, with less complex runs, and more back and forth with more attachments. Last season, you were also allowed to drive in the black area of the board which was interesting. The goal in recent years has been to allow teams to use only the spike prime kit (without expansion) to compete with a small driving base (seen in launch videos) with positives for the smaller size, less opportunities to correct on walls or launch from walls, and more precision needed to complete certain missions. I suspect that color sensing for the circles will be beneficial this season.

About the lines- My team(s) have rarely used line following. Although it's been tried many, many times, we just find using the gyro to be much more reliable (even with EV3). I'm glad to see short ones available for squaring up though.

My team really likes the 2-base challenges since we can essentially program to 3 zones: right, left, and moving from base to base. Great questions!!

I do think involving the other team members is a great idea and also utilizing every part of the table is better too! Some years, my teams would not go to the east end because it was too far and hard to be consistent.

As a ref it definitely makes it more interesting having 2 launch areas since there's more to pay attention to.

Always enjoy your videos! I love the addition of the two bases on the board now. More opportunities for the students to be on the board. One of our challenges in Hawaii is that our district competitions start in October/November, so there is so little time for our teams to prepare. I've been having to hold my tryouts at the end of the previous school year so that we can jump right in when the school year starts. Anyways, keep up the awesome work! 🤙🏻

Aloha!!! I have some family on Oahu. I do like the 2 bases because now there shouldn't be a need to switch out drivers. Yeah, I wish they could push it back a bit so that way folks don't feel the need to rush. Thanks for your input and I appreciate all your kind words. Get some Zippy's for me!!

Having two launch areas is just a management thing. Gives the kids another point of strategy to consider, and it does give more opportunity for being involved. I like having 2 launch areas because my team(s) usually build two identical robots and they (with some cooperation) can often have two development sessions going simultaneously.
@LEGORoboticsMrHino4 ай бұрын
Great idea with the 2 bots and it would eliminate the ones that will goof around because they don't have the robot. It would take some cooperation and would be a thing of beauty to see both teams come together in competition.

@@LEGORoboticsMrHino What?! Kids goofing off when they aren't programming?! That never happens. 🤣🤣🤣 Actually, I am going to steal this idea because we have a very short time to prep for qualifiers.

I'm OK with the launch areas mainly because we can involve more students at a time. We used line following with Cargo Connect, but not since. Gyro all the way for us now.

I do like that fact of involving more students in the robot game. Even though I love a good line follow, it seems to unreliable in competition.

Hi. It seems to me that they are trying to make it simpler to move around for younger students (easier?). Maybe precision is going to be less and less as time goes on. Perhaps its time to have a middle age group task for year 8-10 aged students/children. The next level is the VEX system and not all schools have room for that. Certainly the gyro in the Spike hub is good to use. Kinda miss the extra 2 ports compared to the EV3.
@LEGORoboticsMrHino4 ай бұрын
Well I'm guessing that the color sensor is not big a deal now unless you use it to square up the bot. I'm betting that would be too hard to come up with a different board just for that age group. Unless you just get rid of the extra launching area. I guess with the onboard gyro, they took away the extra ports on Spike.
@KimboH554 ай бұрын
I agree with that idea. However if the FLL designers are not needing the light sensor and not using the distance sensor then it is no more than a programmed toy. Disappointing. I remember that you once said the judges were disappointed that your students robot had not utilised all the sensors.
@LEGORoboticsMrHino4 ай бұрын
@@KimboH55 Yes, the rubric had a section on utilizing sensors. Now, it is gone. There is a part that says sensor feedback but that is an "either mechanical or sensor" answer. I am not on the rubric committee so we'll never know why they emphasize something and then take it away.
