SOME TURKISH FOOD PRICE INCREASES DON’T MAKE SENSE!

With inflation around 100% in the last year, here in Türkiye, the prices in the supermarket are at an all time high, but many of the Turkish price increases may not be legitimate? In this video we compared Turkish supermarket prices with the UK supermarkets and found some alarming results. Many of the items you would expect to be cheaper in Türkiye were surprisingly more expensive?

Considering that the minimum wage in UK is more than quadruple the minimum wage in Turkiye , even an item being half the price of UK means it's expensive here.

6:15 you're absolutely right saying it should be cheaper in Turkey. We get our salary as liras and, so, if 1-pound equals to 23 Turkish liras there is no way that the prices can be the same with that currency gap.

It's a sad state of affairs. Prices are skyrocketing while manufacturers continue to cut corners and the quality of their products goes down. Shrinkflation is also an issue, as I notice some products shrink in size AND increase in price! I can't imagine how frustrating it is for the Turkish people to see the value and purchasing power of their currency shrink as their wages go up.

Recently, when I talk to a Turk, he responds aggressively to me. People cannot go on vacation, cannot meet their food needs, and avoid shopping. This is the situation in Turkey. In the past, tourists used to say we were hospitable, but now he says we are too cold and aggressive. We have experienced economic difficulties before, but this is the first time we have encountered such a situation.

That is because at the top EU level. They want the entire EU as a single block. But this is impossible. As much as people don't like .. there is safety in using different currency. With so many factories give abroad.. keeping the factories working is costly too. They should never have done so this way. Whoever are managing those... They got it wrong. It's probably a lot easier to produce it in their home country and then take advantage of the currency fluctuation. Not in euro.... Maybe time to take those factories back to... Where the tax advantage works out ?... These people don't know how to do this.

Because of those who escaped from Ukraine, those who escaped from the desert, those who are close to Europe and wait to cross when they have the opportunity. profoundly and neatly explained. turkish lira has totally been crushed against foreign currencies. in 14 years ago 1000 turkish lira was 6400 chinese RMB but if i go to china today and exchange it, i need to pay 18700 turkish lira to have 6400 chinese yuan. as you said at the beginning your money is incomparably more valuable than turkish lira and has an accumulating value you can keep it. it does not lose anything of its value. when i was england years ago a cup of capuccino price was same as of today. but here turkish money value plummeting while other currencies stay same. this the main issue in here, turkey. thanks for your great efforts.

Everything is expensive in Turkey. I used the Istanbul as example, the milk 1L in sok is 13.5TL in the middle of 2022 and 22TL ; The bread is from 3.95 TL to 5.95 TL; the public transport system from 7.2 TL to 9.9 TL

Prices have gone up so much in Turkiye and the UK .I was in Fethiye in October and whilst affordable for a Brit it must be very difficult for Turkish people on minimum wage .The markets were certainly cheaper than the supermarkets and the produce much better.

Just to point out, products such as cola and Nutella have cheaper ingredients and mixes in Turkey, so they aren’t actually like for like. For example magnum in UK has so much more milk than Turkish version

As you mentioned, despite the similar prices, purchasing power in Turkey is much lower, so it becomes absurdly expensive for a normal citizen to buy all their necessities. And also oftentimes, Turkish brand stuff uses cheaper ingredients, the best example being ice creams, so you buy the same stuff, lesser quality, still same price but with less money in your pockets

exactly. most global brands have separate production facilities here in Turkey instead of importing their products. Hence why nutella you see on the video is that price and imported german nutella sold on the internet is 3x more expensive. Average shampoo price is around 50-60 lira but imported ones are around 200-300 online. so when you take into consideration quality of products compared to european ones, Turkey is actually more expensive than most of europe :(

Prices today in Selcuk market have shot up. Turkiye is definitely getting more expensive and how locals manage I don't know. Having said that, lots still manage to purchase IPhones which are ridiculously expensive. Taking in the average wage, Turkiye is far more expensive overall.

@@Imran-qz3xm and I don't think you ever lived outside of turkey. I lived in Poland for a year before I had to come back and quality of products are very different between the two. Palmolive stopped producing quality shower gels few years ago because the cost of it was going up and demand was dropping. Now they produce very poor quality stuff that feels like the American jello powders you mix with water. When le petit Marseillais came to Turkey in 2015 or sth, I was excited because I had the chance to use their products in Europe and guess what, it was jello consistency and very bad quality, never bought it again. If you try to make the same quality product as in Europe, it would cost 5x more in supermarket shelves.

Hi Mick. I appreaciate what you try to make understand people about Turkish prices. As a born and live Turk, I witnessed this translation in economy during my college time in Istanbul. We were able to visit Germany or Italy only with saving accounts even though we were students. However, today, it is not possible to apply for a visa because of lack of capital and other economical causes. I never agree with this kind of comparisons since it is not scientific but indicates us another important difference which is purchase power. While we were able to buying more than a thousand liters of fuel only with wage floor, now even quarter of it today, people cannot afford to get it thus which results in being a low cost country at the end.

Due to the "personal" taxes imposed by local shopkeepers, hotel owners and restaurant owners, Turks cannot even go on vacation. I don't think there is any other country and people who treat their own people with such disrespect. I am 16 years old and after I finish my studies at school, I go straight to work. I am ashamed to ask my parents for money because they are in distress too. When I come home in the evening, I can't even find time to watch a movie. I'm only 16 years old and it wouldn't be a lie if I say my hair is gray from stress. Regardless, I will not leave my country. I hope we get rid of the current administration as soon as possible.

Marmaris is one of the most expensive regions of Turkey. Pricing is done in Euros there. This situation minimizes the opportunity of Turkish people to have a holiday. It is not possible to see Turkish in Marmaris.

Bazaar prices during winter are very low, as 4400 turkish total villages in Turkey have been living 1800s lifestyles under full muddy conditions and irritating village houses in Turkey. Turkish villagers own and use 1960s simple renault, fiat cars and trucks, houses made of cow shit i.e. tezek in turkish and no natural gas come to any turkish villages. 5 percent of total population of 88 million incumbents in Turkey live like that in villages. İ had lived in Milledgeville Georgia village in the USA for 12 months and i can live there all through my life without any hassle and with joyfullness with new car and new mobile home. Milledgeville was similar to Zurich Switzerland with outlet centers, couple of shopping malls, 3 very big 24/7, 365 days operating Wall Mart, K Mart, Winnie Dixie, Sears etc , big Nestle factory, 5 golf courses in the village vicinity, 1 airplane landing grounds. Rents have never changed since 1995 in Milledgeville GA, commencing 450 usd per month for 2 plus 1, 80 square meters apt including water. Long John Silver, Chick Fil A , Sizzlers, Outback Steak House, some 2 star American hotels with 2 big 200×200 cm sized beds in all rooms.

Putting aside the comment I made a few hours ago, I would like to thank you for this video. A kindly reminder from a person knowing Turkey's dynamics very well, when you want to calculate how much a kilo of an item costs, in Turkey the more you buy the less per kilo price. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that it works anywhere the same as in Turkey. I lived in Malta for 6 months and I've lost count of how many items were more expensive when I bought in larger amounts. Despite being slightly cheaper when buying in larger amounts, the price difference isn't that high in France or Switzerland.

Interesting video. I often compare prices from the UK to Turkey too. Thing is, for Turkish people who earn in TL, inflation has been awful. The bread prices for example. A loaf of bread was about 3 or 4 lira last month. Most families buy around three or four loaves per day. For Turkish people on the minimum wage (8500 Tl =£370), 360 lira per month is a lot for bread. That's why there are such long queues every morning outside the government bread shops. The bread is slightly cheaper there. I've been outside of Turkey for about a month. When I return I expect the prices to have risen. Those tomatoes I saw in your video were a shocker. Last time I bought tomatoes in Turkey I paid 16 tl for a kilo. That was only a month ago.

Taking purchasing power into account, we can easily come to the conclusion that everything in Turkey is expensive and hence not as affordable as in the UK. As a Turkish born and bred living in the frontier between France and Switzerland, I can tell you that Turkey has been experiencing the worst time in history. The minimum wage was just increased to 8500 Turkish liras which is equivalent of about 370 Pounds Sterling. Inevitably, It'll be trading fewer pounds in value within a few months. Therefore, how come we can make a comparison between the direct prices by not taking the purchasing power into consideration. I can buy an iPhone 14 pro max 256 GB at 1419 Swiss Francs (1410 Euros) from Apple's official store here in Switzerland, in Turkey, to buy the same phone, you need to pay 2285 Euros. When you want to acquire a car or a laptop, you need to buy 2 for the government! The only thing that needs to be taken into consideration is the purchasing power, nothing else. How many items can you buy by putting the same effort in both countries? Or in other words, how much time do you need to spend working to buy a specific item? (I'm not talking about you, please don't get me wrong. However, I regret to inform you that either consciously (I don't think so) or unconsciously you're being part of the black propaganda created by the Turkish government blaming 'so-called ''external forces or interest lobby from whom he keeps borrowing money!.

Then, how can you have them accept something that can not be explained through numbers and that are abstract? Depends where you shop in turkey. You can get cheaper products in the local pazars or from private farmers.

When I go over to our place in Barcelona...I always compare prices... vegetable oil and bananas are double UK prices...UK is generally cheaper overall...I like Turkey..we visit twice a year !!

UK is cheaper? I found UK is one of the most expensive countries in Europe when you convert the pound to dollars. We travelled extensively including many cities in Spain. Only Switzerland and Norway were more expensive than UK. We only visited London, 3 times, most recently last May, and Manchester once though. Hotels were more expensive, probably 100% than Barcelona and Madrid, food were also more expensive. Actually you can check the living expenses comparisons on the internet, at sites like neonomads, expatistan etc. London, New York are way up there as the most expensive places. I was in Spain the last time in 2014, third trip to Spain and each time we found Spain was more affordable than UK and US.

Median income would probably be a more realistic comparison, to avoid some high salaries at the extremes from ruining the averages.

Turkey has gotten restrictive and expensive to live and buy in, a years Turkish residency permit now costs about £350 including insurance, it's starting to cancel the benefits of living here as opposed to southern EU

Although turkey may produce things prices go by the open market prices around the world as there is a food shortage so producer's won't sell cheaper to the home market if they can get more exporting it 😎👍

Fresh fruit and vegetables are cheaper in "the south" , because the area around Antalya is the power house for agricultural production. Further you may find farmers markets in the southern part of Türkiye which are the cheapest. Ship those products to Istanbul and add all the costs of transport, highway tolls,wholesellers profit, tax to that and you won't be buying in Türkiye anymore. Further noticed from your "minced meat" price that your video in Türkiye was produced before X-Mas? Currently it's 200 to 210TL/kg . The best comparision of both countries are the inflation index comparisons. "ENAG" (Independent Economy Professor's Group) announced a 176% !!! (one/seven/six) inflation rate for 2022. The government linked TUIK (Turkish Statistics Office) "experienced" a laughable figure of 79%. So in ENAG we trust.

It is possible that companies increase prices because they can't predict inflation rates. Also prices can be higher because selling goods outside of the country could be more sustainable stable income so they don't give lower prices to locally. What ever reasons however it is messed up, people make so little and addition to that prices are whack.

If Turkey could have constructed İzmir, Afyon, Ankara, Kayseri, Malatya, Van motorways, loop motorways connections and Samsun, Amasya, Corum, Ankara, Afyon, Antalya motorways , loop motorway connections ; Turkey would have been developed country attaining it's targets. Also high speed train lines among those turkish cities must have been built within 100 years of Republic.

Turkey is not cheap anymore. I could give you an extensive list of things cheaper in Europe than here. Sometimes I had the impression that the solitary exception is gasoline. The worst in Turkey are the prices for cars, they are absolutely crazy.

thanks for the comparisons. I think the reason why prices in Turkey are ridiculous for our average/minimum wages is because everyone in the chain tries to leave a bigger "profit" for themselves to protect themselves from the crazy inflation. and that causes inflation to get even worse...

@@MrJx4000 erdogan blames the turkish version of lidl kinda discount markets to be raising prices together and profiting off of the people but everyone (with a brain) knows that it's total bs and those markets are running on such low profit margins and they have to raise prices to stay in business at all. it's propaganda and blaming someone or something else for his own fault.

Mick it makes perfect sense these big Supermarkets control food and prices they push it to the max the market will allow. Profiteering capitalism and market driven economy. Fuel being cheaper helps but car prices far higher and now Sigorta dearer than the UK. we shop in the markets if possible rather than the Big chains..

Problem is lira is too overvalued due to government suppressing the exchange rate by selling its reserves in a kamikaze style just until the election. Turkey needs lira to be devalued by 80-100%
