I've yet to figure out how to get out of a hold. I'm guessing it varies by move, as pressing attack certainly makes you punch or kick faster in the moves that allow for it. I found the Weekend Warriors (UFC/MMA) fed to be absolutely brutal because their matches don't even allow for rope breaks, while so many of their wrestlers will counter nearly anything into a hold. Simply trying to attack at the start of the match would see me countered into a hold which would then cost me 25-50% of my health. Though the CPU certainly seems to have less trouble reversing your holds...

The best way to escape a submission is R+A so run and attack, whatever the keys are on controller, and if it's finger four I usually use G+A which is also used for reversing moves.
