Baba Yaga is an ambiguous character in Russian and Slavic lore. In some tales, she is the villain, other tales, she is the helper. And in this film, she appears as both, which is a good testament to the original lore. She initially appears to be wicked, but turns out to be good. She is really well written.

It's interesting how in the beginning, the opening song painted her to be a malevolent no-nonsense villainous witch (which from the Russian myth, she mostly is). But when she makes her character establishing debut, she has a more "jazzy" musical performance and trolls with Bartok just to sing her whole song.

So does this technically mean Bartok had two villain songs? We have the song from Ludmilla but we have this song which has very creepy undertones and Baba Yaga was portrayed as the antagonist until she cried when Bartok insulted her and reveals that she never took the Prince.

I'd say Baba Yaga is more of an anti-hero. She says so herself "I'd rather be alone in the woods and not be bothered" She doesn't do anything actively malicious, just trolling mostly. Edit: I just realized this comment was from 5 years ago so HI FROM 2024

Baba Yaga is a tough character to pin down. At least they got the trappings right (The hut on giant chicken legs, the flying mortar and pestle)...but the real Baba is a little bit more evil...though she'll repay favors, she eats disobedient little children, so you have to be careful around her.

If this movie was the prequel, how did Bartok go from saving the Zaur to destroying the Zaur family with Rasputin. In fact, I think the prince in this film if a young version of Anastasia's father.
@MarnieLuna Жыл бұрын
Bartok is very magical. As the Prince is Ivan Romanov and the film on Wikipedia says it is Ivan Romanov who was born in 1560s. And Anastasia's father is Nikolai II Alexandrovich Romanov who was born in 1868. Anastasia herself was born in 1901. So Bartok is very magical bat to live for more than 300 years. Sometimes you got to switch up your allegiances if you live that long.
