When I was little my Italian immigrant grandmother would scold me when suntanning outdoors. In her day only peasants who worked out in the fields had dark skin. Grandma was very light skinned and would apply white talcum powder to her face before getting dressed up. The lighter the skin the more the money you had. Also if you were thin you were poor. A bucksom woman signified your husband could afford feed you.

This movie opened my eyes to realize how far down society has gone and how even basic civility has deteriorated in these times now. People from the era of this movie would be so shocked if they could see things as they are today. I'm so glad I grew up when I did in the 1950's. Thanks for posting this charming story.

Indeed, however, Im realizing that evils did exist during these times as well however, they were ashamed unlike today when people are happy to celebrate their evil. We pray for guidance and blessings as the promised punishment is due, due to our actions. smh

My Nova Scotian Grandmothers, both born in 1899, whom I was lucky enough to have still in 1999, told me that "a real lady is a woman who knows how to allow a man to be a gentleman". Even now, when you act like a gracious and kind lady, most men, young and older, instinctively know how to react as gentlemen in my experience.

It`s not all doom and gloom. I have a daughter, a son-in-law, and a grandson. And I am a teacher, which means that I`m in constant contact with young people, and many of them are very decent young people around, who care for their families. The problem with us people is, that we oftentimes tend to idealize the past and the people in it. Times change, but then they always have. In the 1920`s young people were far more wild than they are today. In the 50`s there was also a lot going on. History teaches us that the older generations have always been disappointed in the younger generations. It`s difficult to accept changes but it`s inevitable. No generation is perfect, and no era in history has ever been perfect. Far from it.

🇬🇧 Thats the way a film should be! To make you feel good inside. Ive always thought that the older generation, the grandparents get on much better with the younger ones, the grandkids. I adored my grandparents & we got on like a house on fire & we did mad things together & laughed so much! Even though i had a super mum & dad, they were correct & lead by good example for me to follow. But the most fun in my younger life was always with my grandparents. Now my grandson is 17yrs & we have always been close & almost Telepathetic & his pals love coming to my house with him & we laugh & talk for hours They are always asking me what it was like to be young in the 1960s & 70s. They listen to my music records of the rock bands of my youth & look at my photos when we all wore mini skirts & they thrill to my stories! Yet my 2 daughters werent that interested.. The older & younger generations Are so suited & the age gap doesnt exist! Thank you for this wonderful film! I must say my grandsons friends are so courteous & exceedingly well mannered towards me & never a bad word Its quite wonderful.. Peace & Good Cheer to All 🇬🇧👧

He had been a drug addict and in gangs, and after trying to rob her one night when he was about 17 his little brother conked him in the head with a vase and chased him out of the house. He never returned home....and that was 50 years ago. She always believed he was alive somewhere even though the odds were very much against it.

@@maryowen1722please understand that some people prefer to read comments before a film because it makes them feel less alone with the experience, but it really spoils it when intrusive opinions affect one’s apprehension towards the end. Of all the old movies I've watched ,I've never seen this one. Brought tears to my eyes. "The boys" were wonderfully played. I saw a young Peter Lawford. This generation really disturbs me. They seem to want a quarrel all the time. Guns , quick Tempers,so much useless loss of life. Yes,our Society is not kind and we Should have learned many lessons from the past but as always we don't till much pain and grief is cost. Especially to Parents who try so hard to do their best. Thank you for sharing this movie. 😢🙏✌️♥️

My first jaded, cynical reaction was " how sappy, how ridiculous!" Then , I realized that this was true entertainment. It wasn't meant to reflect all the shortcomings of life but to lift us from harsh reality if even for a moment. After allowing myself to suspend blief to just enjoy the sentimentality of it I felt peaceful, happier somehow. I'm gonna be watching more old movies. I need some joy and peace these days.

Such a lovely film! It brought tears in my eyes. She died happy believing her son was coming home. I was sad when she died until I realized from the chauffeur that her son was a bad lot and died and would have never come back and this man was just a name sake.

Mrs. Freeman may not have been a biological grandmother to but she was grandmother to that whole dorm to young men and women who needed it. I bet if young men and women have her kind gentle guidance, today , they could count themselves blessed.❤

Oh how I wish they still made beautiful heartwarming films like this today! Back when no matter your income, race etc. almost everyone had basic manners and etiquette! Even the poorest took pride in providing loving homes and taught class even without money! Every generation now has just gotten less respectful and more selfish. So sad!😢 I want to be a great grandma like the character in this movie! Class, softness, generosity and grace!

I worked for the post office and when I was putting the mail in up in so boxes that were in the lobby an old man came up to me and said: Little darlin I could take you in my arms and waltz across Texas with you. I could have told him that he would have his work cut out for him because I certainly was no dancer 💃🏻. 😅😅😅😅

This movie showed back in Hollywood's earlier days , that they had a heart, morals, and allowed God in the film!! Those commenting how far we have fallen morally, spiritually, and politically are so right on target, we have become all that our parents taught us not to be !! America us in serious decline, and it will take more than a new president to heal the evil, may God melt our cold hearts towards each other, even those we disagree with!! Thanks for your time!!
