Here is video of someone jamming the Hurricane Watch Net on 20 meters by playing music. The Hurricane Watch Net gathers weather info from impacted areas during a hurricane and passes that on to the The National Hurricane Center in Miami. They also handle emergency traffic from the impacted areas. It’s really sad that anyone would jam this net during a hurricane.

I'm surprised that anybody would find it surprising. I think the misconception is that hams represent a "higher order" of human. That simply isn't true. Hams represent the full spectrum of humanity, including the best of humanity and the worst of humanity. Frankly, jamming a secondary net is minor compared to the people that go in after the hurricane and take advantage of the people that suffered during the storm. It's also nothing new....this behavior has been around since I first got on radio in the 80's. The difference is that social media allows for faster and fuller dissemination of that behavior.

We really need to be working together to find these people. This and a number of other things I hear on the air are embarrassments to amateur radio.

That’s why you never stick to one frequency. You should always have alternate frequencies to fall back on just in case of QRM to pass the emergency traffic

I see a lot of comments assuming the jammer was a HAM. Anyone can own and use a transceiver. It's likely not a HAM doing this.

Turns out, by my observations, somewhere between 5 to 10 percent of the population are just terrible people. Unfortunately, when they feel anonymous they show their true colors. You can see this in comments, on the radio, and the one that really gets me, while driving. Ham radio had it's share to.

It is a shame when that happens ….. but sounds like they got their information across . I had listened in to 20 and 40 meter communications ….. along with digital communications and ZMR . Most of what I was monitoring was from the affected islands and even relayed emergency messages with my Team members . Still listening in ….. but won’t give out our sources because of jammers and those nasty trolls . We have been receiving calls from officials on the different islands and our A.C.T. Team recognition for the help . Building on our new contacts on these islands as the Emergency Coordinator of the A.C.T. Team …. It’s been a real pleasure . But much more work to be done .

We had a similar problem couple times. Strangely enough simultaneously a fox hunt was happening and even weirder I heard a pin somehow ended up in jammers coax. Probably just rumors but jamming stopped.❤

@steve7730 people in texas said they know about where he is from driving truck in the area, saying that it is not from skip coming in. going on what others have reported from their results. when somebody transmits for 12hrs at a time, it would be very easy to fox hunt the signal.

Isn't the cuban govt. jamming some amateur radio traffic? And if the net participants didn't say anything, could they hear it? Propagation for you could be different than for them. Just some thoughts.

Acknowledging the jammer in any way only lets them know that they are succeeding. Best practice is not to say anything that would indicate there is interference of any kind on the frequency. Only then will they eventually get bored and move on.

Womp womp.. Have a backup plan 🤷🏼‍♂️ if us ham radio operators want to act like we are vital in emergencies but we don’t have a backup plan for when things aren’t working, our usefulness in an emergency is laughably low. The solution isn’t making a video to complain, it’s to create backup plans where those people/entities that are jamming us don’t matter or are worked around. What happens when your own government or another government tries to jam your communications in a bad scenario? There is already plenty of censorship online already. That will be way worse and way easier for them, than something like this. Are we really equipped for true emergencies if we can’t even work around some random goofball playing music? No we aren’t. Plan accordingly. Edit: I'm NOT defending the jammer. I'm simply trying to focus on our need to roll with the punches and not be jammed easily during emergency situations.

Yeah that person is a loser, but we can't prevent losers from being losers. Just gotta work around them the best we can and have lots of alternate communication options. Eventually, a single loser can't jam everything.

@@JAT_4321 Yep, good guys simply ignoring bad guys and trying to work around them. Doesn't that always work to the benefit of society? I get your point about having a Plan B - I'm all about contingency planning, but I also know what happens when we continue to shrink the envelope of what's considered acceptable behavior.

Well, they can always just QSY to a diff frequency. Since it's been shown, proven, argued and argued again that THEY DO NOT OWN 14.300. They hold NO special privileges over any other operators.
