KZbin really needs to allow people to create "Killswitch" OTPs. so that in an emergency you can enter the code in on a page and have the page immediately privated and locked. alerting google in the process. it would probably cut down on a LOT of these issues. because half of the reason people's accounts end up getting terminated for this is because of how slow youtube is to respond to a channel that has been hijacked, giving it plenty of time to gather reports for being a scam page. Because if you gather so many reports it probably becomes very difficult for google to just "Fix it" because of the automated system...You basically have to keep harassing them until they escalate it to someone who can help, which is tough when you are not just locked out of the account but the account it self has been terminated. It would be really nice if there was a "big red button" you could hit in an emergency to shut the channel down before it gets so bad that automated systems get involved.

Careful Mutahar.. As a professional security engineer, the one thing i’ve learned is that there is ALWAYS someone better than you, there are many levels to this game. Edit: VMs does not solve everything, OS compartmentalisation is good. But you do absolutely nothing to protect your L2-L4 coms, only micro segmentation and a ngfw can do that. A Real sandboxing environment is where traffic is decrypted and executed inline to the device. And will in turn spoof tcp retries to stop the session if anything malicious is detected. This together with a real dlp solution, checking that your outbound traffic does not contain any private tokens or keys could do a lot more to actually protect you.

Another small measure that helps a bit, is to install multiple browsers. Use one for generic browsing, never login into anything important on this one. Make it the operating system's default browser. Use another separate browser for KZbin. And another for managing hosts in your own network, another only for online banking. And if possible, compartmentalize your socials, too.

So, "information silos". That makes sense. I've never thought of that.

this is def a small measure... Your better off just using tor or brave... Or like you said, use brave for everyday task and tor for online banking, accessing your router provider. information silos? Not anything close to what this is, in fact this would just be detrimental. Increased risk of data breaches: Silos can create vulnerabilities, as each isolated system may have its own security weaknesses, increasing the attack surface for hackers. Limited transparency and accountability: Consumers may struggle to access or understand their own data, as it’s scattered across different systems, making it difficult to exercise their privacy rights. Inefficient password management: Hiding passwords in separate silos can lead to duplicated efforts, increased complexity, and higher risk of password reuse or exposure. Standardized data formats and protocols: Promote standardized data formats and protocols to facilitate seamless data exchange and reduce technical barriers. Transparency and accountability: Support organizations in providing transparent and accessible data management practices, enabling consumers to understand how their data is handled and exercised their privacy rights. LONG SHOT Centralized password management: Advocate for centralized password management systems, using secure and scalable technologies, such as password managers or identity and access management (IAM) solutions BEST SOULTION ATM

I think this video needed to also explain some of the workflows to deal with vector attacks. The VM alone won't do anything if you plug your credentials into it, which you mentioned, but there's a big gap in knowledge on how to move forward to handle these scenarios the right way (forward the email to a burner account and open inside the VM, copy the links and then download within the VM). The reason why infosec can be so complicated it's because while, yes, the tools exists, the most important part is knowing what you're doing and why, and I wouldn't want inexperienced users to see this and somehow believe VMs are a silver bullet. Also, for everyone setting up VMs on Window/Linux, make sure paravirtualization is on on your BIOS if your CPU supports it, great performance boost to be had.

Here is an easier option than a virtual machine , which creators like me find too complicated. If a potential sponsor reaches out and wants you to review a contract or talking points via a PDF, just let them know that you do not open PDFs, and they can send you the contracts and talking points to your PO Box , you will obviously need a PO Box ( if you are in the US, Im not sure what they are called in other countries, but get one!) , they usually cost about $200 a year , and they are nice to have because it has been my experience that viewers relly like to send creators things relevant to your content, and its a Tax write off. Time to embrace old school, it's safer! ( yes, I have a sponsor, we do business through the mail, I learned this lesson when I was at about 5k subs and was sent a PDF from a game sponsor, and I downloaded malware to my computer, I now have a new computer and lessons learned, sponsors will have no problem working with you via snail mail, your reach is worth the extra effort on their part.

an easier approach is to simply open the file on your phone or maybe an android VM, much harder to accidentally run something that way
@justvintagecrochet9 күн бұрын
@ I hear you, I feel that even using a phone is not safe because you will fill out a contract with your personal info, maybe pay a paralegal to look it over er for you only to send that info back into the hands of a scammer, if a sponsor is legit and serious about working with you, they will be happy to use the mail, scammers will insist on digital dealings. This approach will weed out those with nefarious intentions

As someone with decades of computer experience it's still surprising that techy-savvy people fall for some of this but I understand it. What happened to Jim Browning awhile back was more clever but a lot of that was Google's fault. One other simple thing everyone reading this should do is enable file extensions to be displayed in Windows so there's no mistaking what the real extension is. Open file explorer, View, Options, then uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types" under the view tab. This still not being the default behavior has caused so many avoidable problems. Also, this should go without saying but keep in mind that while VMs are great at keeping things from getting out, they aren't necessarily good at stopping something from getting in. I've seen people use them in ways that they clearly didn't understand. Unless you really know what you're doing, don't use them to for sensitive info on the assumption that it's safer if the host machine could get compromised. Running security focused Linux distros in a VM is an especially bad idea and defeats the whole purpose.

I remember when people were peddling Apple as "unhackable" back when their biggest product was the Ipod touch (Best thing that ever came from them imho), then everyone started buying it because hackers are scary and then Apple was all of a sudden a valid target as they were a popular choice whose demographic had deep wallets.

So it turns out there is some actual psychological aspects at play here when it comes down to scammers sending emails that are so obviously fake due to poor english, unprofessionalism, etc. They purposely do that to weed out the people who will be skeptical, and the people they are targeting may not be old enough, or might be too old (boomers) to realize there is an issue. So they are directly cutting out how many people will respond. It seems counter-intuitive but makes sense. The ones you have to watch out for are the ones that do come across as professional and have no signs of a scam. Such as the ones Linus fell for.

Had my accounts hacked a few days ago. I understand exactly what it means to overgo all sort of measures to recover and change passwords. It's annoying and frustrating. I am lucky my KZbin hadn't been affected although it's quite small, I put a lot of work in it.

A channel called Retro Rick got hacked. I don’t know exactly how, but I do know that they had an extremely hard time getting it back.

Other KZbinrs: "My fellow content creatures are getting hacked, it's sad, but they have only themselves to blame." Muta: "KZbinrs are getting hacked, here is a 24 minute long video, more than half of which teaches you monkeys how not to get hacked. You're welcome."

I get 2 to 4 fake sponsorship emails a week. This isn't anything new.. Doesn't every creator get these fake emails regularly? Been happening to me for over 6 years on my 17 year old channel. My channel is just as old as Irate Gamer. We started the same year and I can't believe I was only 11 at the time. Now I'm 28. damn. I feel so bad.. I couldn't imagine that loss..

I’m actually glad I’m not big enough to be getting emails from sketch sponsors. I don’t trust anybody. If someone wants to sponsor me, I need to meet with them in person. Or zoom call them, face to face. A simple call on the phone or email won’t be enough. KZbin/Google needs to fix this. Now

this exact same thing happened to my twitch in 2022, replaced my pfp with a tesla logo, bio was just malware links claiming to be crypto, streaming on my channel with 2000 viewers, by the time i was alerted by my viewers and logged into my account i was instantly banned, luckily twitch sorted it for me within 3 weeks, I really feel for anyone it's happening to here like that, I can't believe youtube won't give him his account back

"show file extension" feature should be the default for quite some time imo - not showing it should be opt-in for people that know what they are doing

Irate Gamer channel being gone was very alarming; an entire playlist worth of videos wiped at once was alarming for sure and drew me to check on his channel only to see it taken down. He has quite a legacy so it's a shock to just see it blank out just like that.

How do you prevent getting hacked?! 😧 Gee I dunno how about: 1. Don't click shady links/files. 2. Send them through a virus checker. 3. Just basic googling about if there is a (insert link/file name) scam . 4. Keep repeating until you learn basic safety or red flag indication.

One note to add, using WSL directly on your host is not a safe usecase, because the Linux VM running gets access to the full Windows storage, if you want to use WSL either use flatpak applications and revoke file permissions with Flatseal, or run things inside a chroot container or just a normal VM. Also Wine by default is able to access your documents folder, and able to mount other locations from your storage if they detect it is wine.

Happened to my old channel. Wa so old youtube couldnt do anything. I didnt do muh with it, had a few videos I just downloaded and have on an externql hard drive. They just got that password from an old leak somewhere. Sucks for Irate Gamer. You'd imagine if it's still active yt would be able to handle retrieving it.

FINALLY someone is covering this that has a lot of reach. I have been doing what I can to report channels that appear to have been hacked as they show up in my feed. They arent just pushing crypto scams, they are also re-uploading content from other channels, showing full episodes\movies, or just uploading str8 up AI generated content. Many of them I have seen show clips form shows and TVs in the form of shorts. They always have royalty free music overlayed in the clip that more often than not doesnt match the tone of the scene. Effected channels are somewhat easy to spot if you know what to look for. Things you can check is upload frequencies, sudden changes in content, random disclaimer that claims everything in the video is fair use and to contact the channel owner instead of reporting it, emojis everywhere, poor grammar, compilation videos that seem spliced or have clips that cut off abruptly, ect

cant align more with you mutahar, i've got multiple USBs with lives, and each computer has multiple partitions with at least 2 OS's, one for main use, and another in emergency where i can quickly swap during suspicious activity of main OS, load the other, scan the crap out of everything on the infected partition, and if that goes wrong ofc theres usb live's that will continue the process. I've had some interesting experiences with students in Zoom where one older gentleman pretended he was dumb trying to learn programming, and midpoint the connection fell off for 10 seconds, and my MouseWithoutBorders started acting up and being tagged by my antivirus as acting suspiciously, so i cut the session, and proceeded with my scans and purging. Another case where something snuck onto one of my backup hard drives and for the life of me had been fighting over and over the same issues until i realized an old PC backup was infected and the files existed on my hard drive so a couple weeks of scanning and checking modification dates/logs later i cleaned it up. This stuff is going to get worse and worse with more clever attack vectors, especially with god knows how many zero days exist on the dark market...

I was hacked one time and they took my Discord and my emails. I was so lucky enough to be able to be on top of the hacker and I got all my stuff back. I have since then changed all my stuff and keep my stuff locked down. I got a message from a trust friend that was very convincing, but they were hacked and I clicked the link :/

A bit easier to use is the Windows Sandbox feature. It's ephemeral, thus you'll always have a clean sandbox when starting, and it starts fast! It's what I use for years in my IT career to develop scripts for custom software.
