Somerfield and the Youghiogheny reservoir. Somerfield is a small town that does not exist anymore. It was located in Southwestern Pennsylvania in Somerset County. It was quite a town in it's day with many churches...stores...hotels and a railyard. During the 1940's it was decided that the entire population would be moved out and the area flooded to make way for a new reservoir. The dam for this reservoir is located in Confluence, Pennsylvania. Very little remains today but there are still a few surviving items of Somerfield. The first of which is two stone bridges...both are very impressive. The old national road...(Route 40)...still runs along the remains. During certain winter months one can still walk along the sidewalks and over the bridges. The foundations of the many homes are still there as well. Even today...broken bits of plates and coffee cups...among other items...wash up on shore. If you are ever in this part of the country when the water is low...take the time to visit Somerfield.
