Somerset After the Floods BBC Documentary 2015
The Somerset Levels are one of the most beautiful parts of Britain, but in the winter of 2013 they faced a natural disaster.
One village, Moorland, was entirely engulfed by the floods. Deluged by water, the villagers watched helplessly as their lives and homes were washed away. This programme follows their year-long struggle to get home again after the water drained and media attention shifted away.
Although the residents put on a brave face, the realities of their fate pile up - the refusal of insurance companies to pay up, and the months of delay with the builders. All this adds fuel to a heartfelt frustration that the floods were man-made and the nagging fear of what would happen to them if and when the waters return.

Brave, brave people of Moreland, Somerset. I marvel at their spirits in the midst of so much tragedy and heartbreak. Chennai, India recently had the most horrendous flooding because of sudden copious rains, extremely unprecedented. One of the reasons for flooding was because the people of Chennai have reclaimed and built high residential and commercial buildings over large rain-water catchment areas. Lesson: Show some respect for nature. People of Moreland, hope you have recovered by now and may you never have such a catastrophe ever again!

I understand that the villagers are upset but they can't blame people who are trying to help them for dumping water in the town. It was the wettest winter for 250 years, what did they expect?? Without the people clearing out water they would probabbly have floods like this every year. Despite all this i do feel bad for them, look at their houses!

Sea levels are rising and not only did the Somerset Levels used to be swamp, but the flooded villages sit between a large catchment area and the river estuary with the second highest tidal range in the world. Perhaps none of these people realize that Britain experienced record rainfall and horrendously widespread flooding. Other areas could not have flooded because the Somerset rivers had not been dredged. I've heard differing opinions on the wisdom of dredging, but clearly, it's easier to blame the government than nature. As to the wisdom of renovating a house with a front door one foot above flood-prone ground, I think they ought to rethink.

Similar flooding happened in northern Germany (east frisia to be exact) arround 1969. As a result a new pumping station was built. Terrain arround Somerset seems to be similar to east frisia. At arround 27:00, the elderly man claims water was intentionally pumped into their village. Ever heard of rain? Water falling from the sky? The area to remove water from is huge. Draining that is quite the task without massivly expensive infrastructure. 27:57 The better claim would be "You did not upgrade the stations enough to prevent flooding". Just insisting someone lying to you is cheap and wrong.
@MazeFrame
@MazeFrame 7 жыл бұрын
I am not assuming what happend, but what did not happen. The existing canals and pumping stations are not suitable to remove the rainwater. That is it.
@MazeFrame
@MazeFrame 7 жыл бұрын
Looked up the history of the area. It is swampland. It will flood from time to time. It would be great if people could put so much effort in their research before they make decisions as they put effort in defending their bad decision afterwards. "so stop being so insensitive", glorious comment, helps the discussion immensely. Have a nice day.
@davdski5935
@davdski5935 6 жыл бұрын
I think he was referring to the amount of flooding that occurred overnight as a rain event equal to the one the previous year when they didn't flood. I think you are correct that the statement regarding not upgrading equipment to mitigate flooding would have been a more appropriate approach. But just remember these are people who have been under immense duress, from the weather to leaving, to coming home to a dirty stinking polluted house, home and farm. Where they had to battle insurance companies, it all takes its toll and under stress, people often don't articulate things as well as they would do on any other given day. I did like, however, the community piling in and helping each other as best they could, and the builders charging for materials only, no labour should get a bit of free advertising from the local radio stations.

Had to watch this for geography homework. This video has the modern version of Nazis going to the environment agency to say "Why did you give us all this water?" How is it the environment agencies fault that they got flooded. They did all they could to prevent the flooding and they should be thanked for that, not told off for 'giving them all the water' Those residents are mad!
