Actually we’ve been here before. Censorship like this has been done to everything. Movies, Comic books, Music, T.V. And it always goes down the same path Step 1: companies want to make money off hot new medium so they start advertising on said medium. Step 2: Old politicians who think of the platform as being “for children” learn that said medium might have not child friendly stuff on it and Start crying “Won’t somebody think of the Children!” For easy political points. Step 3: Advertisers don’t want to look bad so they work with said politicians to censor the platform. Step 4: consumers become disinterested in medium because it’s had everything unique about it sucked out by censorship. Causing advertisers to lose all their money. Step 5: politicians find even newer medium to blame for all the world’s problems. Step 6: Advertisers remove censorship rules, and are able to make money on platform because people are actually interested in it again.

Nobody relies on COPPA to make sure their kids don't watch what they're not supposed to... That's not what COPPA does. Parents being mindful of what their children watch would not change the situation because it's totally unrelated. COPPA literally does the exact opposite; it protects children from content they're supposed to see. COPPA exists to protect children from websites saving their information. Things like KZbin channels specifically targeting children with child-friendly content. COPPA is just outdated. It requires websites to send a fax or mail requesting for permission to collect children's information.

I agree that KZbin shouldn't collect data from kids, but what COPPA is doing is extending the definition of "Intended for children" to include "attractive to children" which is a huge problem. We're still very much in a culture that sees animation as a kid thing unfortunately. Mainstream cartoon are either obviously for kids or obviously for adults. Inbetweeners are hard to find outside of anime. Actually, there are things that could be seen as childish 10-20 years ago that are now more "normal", because the kids at the time are now adults with income that they can spend. Video games comes to mind, and especially Nintendo games since the characters are colorful and can attract children. So you're kind of in a weird space where you would like to use these characters for satire aimed at adult, but still have to deal with the fact that they could attract kids, even though they're not your audience.
