I surfed with Gerry in Oregon . He is truly a Legend and my hero when I was young. I was Blessed to be able to ride waves with him.

In 1962 I started surfing in Santa Cruz. In 1968 or 69 (?) Surfer had an interview with Gerry and he discussed yoga and its relationship to his surfing. That article sent me on a path of regular yoga practice and surfing. To this day I follow my daily sadhana before surfing. Thank you Gerry.

One of the best of Gerry was when he wasn't even riding the wave. Many years ago in one of the surf magazines there was an 8 shot sequence of him caught inside at outside pipeline. He gets off his board and wraps his right arm around and proceeds to get sucked up the face. At the last second he pushes his board over the top and slips out the back unscathed. The master.

Although I'm sure it's hard to know unless you have felt it or been there I was drawn to it naturally, magnetically. Although there have been the times I lost my way, the Zen and prayerfulness of surfing, the spirit, inner-light and meaning of "Lightning Bolt" have been with me all of my life. I took it with me into the best times and into fully involved structure fires, everywhere. It was an honor to meet you in 80' when I knee-bounced off the reef on a beefy day at Pipe. Your kind words to a discouraged young brother and the Aloha of the whole gang stayed with me. Thanks for everything Gerry,

@jackstrada52633 жыл бұрын
I can answer that for you. Around 1990, when I was about 13, my Dad took me on a snowboard trip to meet up with Gerry in Bend. My Dad shaped boards with Gerry on Maui before he moved. Some local shredders were showing us a hidden run with several jumps, not common on Mt. Flatchler. The last jump was a double. I hung back and watch everyone air off one, then the next. I pointed it and ended up launching over both. I looked down about 15 feet in the air at Gerry and my Dad as I flew over them landing way down the hill. Gerry couldn’t believe how long and high I flew over them, but seeing me do it on my 2nd day, he realized he should be able to go way bigger than he previously saw as his limit. He became obsessed with launching off everything. He next year when we came back, Gerry had he entire mountain wired. He took us off the top cornice first. He told us to just point it and go as big as you can. He blasted a good 25 footer. For Gerry, discover big airs was equivalent to getting a big barrel. With the North Shore crowds, and Maui’s lack of consistent big barrels, Gerry found a new, uncrowned playground in snowboarding. He would spend winters in Bend, and do Bali/Indo surf trips in the summer. He still surfs, big waves in Oregon stand up paddling in the winter, and various surf trips in the summer. But to this day, nothing has him more surf stoked than air time on a snowboard

Seek God in Early Life 12 Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, Before the [a]difficult days come, And the years draw near when you say, “I have no pleasure in them”: 2 While the sun and the light, The moon and the stars, Are not darkened, And the clouds do not return after the rain; 3 In the day when the keepers of the house tremble, And the strong men bow down; When the grinders cease because they are few, And those that look through the windows grow dim; 4 When the doors are shut in the streets, And the sound of grinding is low; When one rises up at the sound of a bird, And all the daughters of music are brought low. 5 Also they are afraid of height, And of terrors in the way; When the almond tree blossoms, The grasshopper is a burden, And desire fails. For man goes to his eternal home, And the mourners go about the streets. 6 Remember your Creator before the silver cord is [b]loosed, Or the golden bowl is broken, Or the pitcher shattered at the fountain, Or the wheel broken at the well. 7 Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, And the spirit will return to God who gave it. 8 “Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher, “All is vanity.” The Whole Duty of Man 9 And moreover, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yes, he pondered and sought out and set[c] in order many proverbs. 10 The Preacher sought to find [d]acceptable words; and what was written was upright-words of truth. 11 The words of the wise are like goads, and the words of [e]scholars are like well-driven nails, given by one Shepherd. 12 And further, my son, be admonished by these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is wearisome to the flesh. 13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man’s all. 14 For God will bring every work into judgment, Including every secret thing, Whether good or evil.

Oh my goodness, the teachings of Gerry Lopez !!! If he was Joe Bloggs part time fun surfer, at best you'd blow him off as having an interesting point of view. But anyone needing the philosophies of another man is living in someone elses house.... its safe but its actually a constraint for those who just might wish to surpass their master.... BUT as a surfer he is deserving of his pre eminence in surfing history...
