that hole in the bricks i've seen a couple times irl. sometimes there's a metal grate instead. I believe its to help with airflow to the fire above, assuming that is the bottom of the chimney. it also helps circulate the air to warm more of the house if your doors are open. "hot air rises and cool air sinks"

Okay guys, that hole that stinks is an ash bin, my house, and most older homes, have them. Each fireplace has a small hatch, you sweep the ashes into the hole, later emptying the one in the basement. Without them you have to remove ashes with a bucket each time. The bottom level is usually an ash collection bin for more than one fireplace, fir us it collects for 3. The foul smell, that's birds, squirrel etc that fall into the chimneys without caps, die and rot. Zach from Ghost Adventures didn't know either. Now you know.

The Trivia answer is Paranormal activity. I hear a lot of different channels, shows, documentaries talking about poltergeist activity. Poltergeists are not necessarily evil. The translation of the German simply means "noisey spirit" or "noisey ghost". While the debate still continues if they are actually spirits or merely the product of latent psy abilities, the body of evidence seems to point to them being created by younger females approaching puberty which means that they could be produced by the changes happening in young girls which happen to be, more often than not, the targets of this activity. PKE (Psycho Kinetic Energy) is still relatively unknown although we have a lot of precursor data that suggests changes within the human anatomy, including the brain, could be the cause for these spontaneous manifestations. So if we follow that particular line of thought, "Poltergeists" aren't nearly as prevalent as they seem to be. More than likely, what is actually being encountered is either a once human spirit or perhaps even a nature spirit which ties in with ancient Nordic stories about homes being visited by spirits who enjoyed creating panic and all sorts of mischief. It was often thought that these nature spirits were taking out their disappointment, anger or frustration with humans who had done something either knowingly or unknowingly that displeased them. This is also where the ancient stories about Trolls comes about as well in Nordic folklore.

Additionally, the hole had a small cast iron door, since removed obviously, but bricks were placed there to keep the birds, squirrels etc out of the house. A friend once left it open, had an insane squirrel in his house until the wildlife people could trap it. Cap your chimneys ya'all.
